How to build a sustainable future?

How to build a sustainable future?

Introduction

Sustainable development is not just about reducing the use of finite resources, it requires us to think about how we use them and how we can make them more efficient. In his speech at the One Planet Summit in Paris, David Attenborough illustrated this point when he said: “We need to rethink our method of collaboration. We must learn from nature itself.”

Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 goals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. They were adopted by the UN in September 2015.

They include:

  • Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere
  • Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
  • Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
  • Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels for all

Means of Implementation

To build a sustainable future, you need to implement the following practices:

  • Invest in disruptive practices and green technologies. Disruptive means of production will be essential for transitioning from traditional to sustainable development. These include micro-grid technology, renewable energy sources (wind or solar power), smart grids, and electric vehicle charging stations.
  • Incentivize businesses to invest in sustainable development. Governments should provide tax incentives for companies that invest in green technologies or produce goods with less impact on the environment. They should also regulate laws against harmful activities like deforestation and pollution so that businesses cannot get away with harming the planet without facing the consequences through lawsuits or other penalties such as fines or shutdown orders from regulators like EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). For example, Norway has created an Integrated Climate Model which is used by political leaders together with industry experts when deciding how much money needs to be invested into developing new products which are more environmentally friendly than their predecessors while still being profitable enough at market prices so they can cover costs during manufacturing; thus creating incentives for private sector investment into innovation within this field

The technology gap and the innovation challenge

The technology gap and the innovation challenges are real problems. However, they are not insurmountable.

The key to addressing these issues is finding ways to bring together the best ideas from many different sources—and then making sure that those ideas can be turned into action.

Global partnerships for development

  • Importance of partnerships. The private sector is one of the most critical actors in development, but it has yet to be used. Diverse models of partnerships have proved their worth and should be fully utilized by all stakeholders.
  • Role of the private sector in development. The private sector plays an important role in investment decisions that affect not only business but also society and the environment as a whole. This partnership will help develop practical solutions to some of today’s key challenges such as climate change, food security, and energy access while at the same time driving economic growth and job creation around the world

We need to rethink our method of collaboration, says Arancha Gonzalez, Executive Director at International Trade Centre.

In the context of a globalized world, we need to rethink our method of collaboration. We need to focus on the SDGs and think about how to implement them. We also have to deal with some implementation challenges: for example, we need technology that can be deployed very quickly in order to make sure we don't miss any deadlines because if you miss one deadline it will become more expensive and more difficult every time you have a delay.

We all know that technologies are changing rapidly; there is an innovation challenge in terms of implementing new solutions that could help achieve these goals.

Conclusion

Arancha Gonzalez of the International Trade Centre concludes, “The biggest takeaway for me is that we need to rethink our method of collaboration. If we want to address these challenges, we all need to be on the same page and work together—including governments and business leaders. I think that’s just as important as having good models or technology solutions in place."
