What Putin’s war on Ukraine has not taught us?

History has taught us that playing the whack-a-mole game of defeating tyrants, despots and dictators does not rid us of bad-ugly politics. We lack the ethical governance of good politics to pre-empt the rise of corrupt leaders.

This failure calls for cultivating good politics based on a constellation of guiding virtues: Love, equanimity, truth-seeking, transparent accountability, human rights and the pursuit of equity, equality and peace. We have failed to make distinctions between virtues and values.

Virtues align us, but values divide us.

Social virtues put ethical guardrails on the individual values of liberty and freedom. Liberty and freedom without equity and equality is political hegemony on common folk.

Equity, equanimity and peace transcends the divisiveness of self-righteous religions and the political tyranny of “us versus them” and wars.

Common folk are all the people who do not have a place at the power table nor any input over their politics and policies that govern them. This exclusion is designed to concentrate power in the political elites, whether in a democracy, a republic or a totalitarian state. The word “folk” evokes the spirit of folk protest song writers, musicians and poets. They represent the voice of justice and human rights for common people.

How can we, as common folk:

• Voice our concerns in ways that make leaders listen and respond to our questions, our needs for fair opportunities and our demands for human rights and justice?
• Defy Putin and other autocratic cronies to promote peace, end wars and ameliorate the risks of nuclear Armageddon?
• Free ourselves against the tyrannies against the individual values of liberty-freedom and the social virtues of equity-equality?
• Hold our leaders transparently accountable to using the social virtues of equity-equality to put ethical guardrails on the individual values of liberty-freedom?
