{How Can You Deter or Reduce Potential Workplace Violence, Bullying, and Business Interruptions?} Educate, Training & Practice!

ANSWER: LEARN HOW TO #COMMUNICATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The importance of measuring and examining responses to threats or violence at the workplace has attracted attention Nationwide, both in terms of potential liability for an employer who fails to take the appropriate steps to protect staff members, and for the person at risk at the time of the event. Most workplace violence material focuses on management strategies on how a company can proactively deter, prepare for, and respond to workplace violence. This educational brief will arm you with basic knowledge of my deescalating behavioral assessment of tips on how to manage difficult events when confronted with a potential workplace violence event. In addition, my eight step passive aggressive communication technique educates potential victims of these difficult events by minimizing the potential acts of violence.

{*These educational tips have been designed to assist in managing workplace interruptions ranging from minor verbal workplace disagreements to assaults.*}

Ideally you should remain calm and professional (practice mental movie scenarios with positive outcomes) or in other words, maintain emotional control…….

DEESCALATING EDUCATIONAL STEPS

Step #1: Identify Yourself – Using your first name establishes three benefits (confidence, interaction with a real person not a corporate figure head, identifying who the person is who is confronting you)

Step #2: Hear Them Out – When people are upset, they want to be heard. Don't force an interruption at this point.

Step #3: Paraphrase What was Spoken to You – An opportunity for you to comprehend, understand the details of the problem or concern.

Step #4: Explain Your Position or Job Responsibilities – The point where you ask the person to do what you want them to do by explaining job responsibilities which narrows down the limited actions you CAN take.

Step #5: Explain Positive Options – To show how the person stands to gain by cooperating with you.

Step #6: Explain Negative Options – To show how the person stands to lose by refusing to cooperate with you.

Step #7: Last Chance – You are nearly out of options, but you are giving that person one final opportunity to cooperate. Be creative at this point.

Step #8: Call for Help – At this point, all steps have failed and the talking is over. It’s time to get someone else to intervene to contribute in ways to decrease the friction.

{*The objective of these educational steps is not to impose your will to change the person’s mind, but to create an atmosphere where the person changes his or her own mind on committing potential violent behaviors.*}

Your effectiveness managing a situation teetering toward aggression or violence depends on how mentally prepared you are (practice mental movie scenarios with positive outcomes). In addition, practicing mental movie scenarios develops your confidence to prepare yourself on maintaining emotional control during workplace violence events.

**PLEASE NOTE: Workplace Violence Prevention policies must reference OSHA's 4 Categories of Violence NOT just the employee on employee threat.**
