How to Choose the Right Lawn Grass Seed for Your Garden

A lush, vibrant lawn is the hallmark of a beautiful home. It’s often the first thing people notice when they visit, and a well-kept lawn can even add thousands to the value of your property. But achieving that perfect lawn begins with choosing the right grass seed.

First, How Do You Use Your Lawn?

Different areas of your lawn serve different purposes, and the grass you choose should reflect that:

  • Front Lawn: Typically ornamental, your front lawn is meant to look attractive and welcoming throughout the season. It doesn’t endure heavy foot traffic, so grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescues, or perennial ryegrasses are excellent choices in northern climates.
  • Back Yard: The backyard sees more wear and tear with family activities and foot traffic. In this case, tough grasses like tall fescue or perennial ryegrass are better suited. Tall fescue is particularly ideal for hotter, drier climates, where irrigation may be limited.
  • Play Areas: Kids love playing on lawns, but their activities can be hard on turf. To keep your lawn durable, overseed with tall fescue, a grass commonly used on athletic fields, to ensure it can withstand heavy foot traffic.

The Right Grass for Your Yard

Choosing the best grass for your lawn goes beyond just the purpose of the area—it’s also about the light conditions.

  • Lawn Grasses Need Light: All grasses need a good amount of sunlight to thrive. Sun-loving grasses may survive in partial shade, but they can become stressed, making them vulnerable to diseases and pests. If your lawn area doesn’t receive full sun, make sure to choose a mixture designed for some shade. Even “shade” grasses need a minimum of 4 hours of light each day to stay healthy.
  • Evaluating Available Light: The amount of sunlight your lawn receives plays a huge role in choosing the right seed.

What Can You Do If Your Lawn Is Too Shady?

If your lawn is in deep shade, you can improve light conditions by pruning nearby trees. Removing small limbs and raising the tree canopy can help more sunlight reach the soil, making it easier for grass to grow. Just be sure to prune correctly to promote healthy healing.
