How to decline an invite

How to decline an invite

As spring arrives, we’re receiving more and more invitations to dinners, networking events, and various gatherings. If you’re struggling with saying “no,” here’s a straightforward way to kindly and honestly decline:

1.Say Thank You

Whether you’re interested in the event or not, start with a thank you. Always be grateful when people think of you!

2.Own It

If you don’t want to attend:

Don’t start with “I can’t” if it’s not the truth (we all know those little white lies!). Own your truth. There’s something magical and respectful about honesty. It adds to your credibility and integrity.

Here’s an option:

- Thank you for thinking of me. It’s not the type of event I thoroughly enjoy, so I’ll leave my spot for someone who would appreciate it more!

If you would have liked to attend but have a prior engagement:

Don’t say, “I have to say no because…” There’s no need to justify yourself – this gives the impression of insecurity. Just own it.

Here’s an option:

- Thank you for thinking of me. I already have an engagement on that day. (the difference here is the ‘have to’ – which communicates lack of personal power - and ‘because’ – which communicates justification).

3.Nurture the Relationship

As humans, we need relationships to not only survive but thrive – both personally and professionally. Close the loop with an invitation to nurture the relationship.

Here’s an option:

- Keep me in mind for future events!

The beginning and the ending of every interaction are the most important elements. Starting with gratitude and ending with kindness is a sure way to showcase what a great person you are 😉!

Test it out and let me know how it goes!
