How to Discover Your Idea of Impact
Your business. Your practice. Your purpose. Your mission.
Whatever you call it, it's what you're here to do.
And if you're like most leaders or practitioners I work with, there is something unique about the way you do what you do.
For some of you, it's the uniquely efficient process you create for your clients.
For others, it's your presence that ignites abilities in your team members they never knew they had.
And for others, it's identifying and solving a problem hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people had but didn't have the words to express—giving birth to a whole new paradigm.
When you discover what is uniquely yours to share with the world, you will find it has a life of its own—and yet is deeply woven into the fabric of what matters most to you. It has called you to create it, and you dare not refuse the call.
It's your idea of impact.
If you want to expand your service to the world, you'll want to identify and share this idea of impact early and often.
By the way, I'm not talking about what's commonly known as your unique selling proposition - the benefits you provide that differentiate you in the marketplace.
Many different individuals and businesses can have the same "unique selling proposition," because a typical USP focuses on what you do and how you do it.
Your idea of impact is rooted not just in what you do or how you do it, but in who you are. It's rooted in your life story.
I'm willing to bet you already know how important it is to have a unique idea of impact in today's content-driven marketplace.
But...what if you've taken all the questionnaires and spent countless hours in reflection, and you still don't know what makes YOUR perspective or offerings unique—in a way you can easily share with others?
Here are three approaches that might help reveal an idea of impact hidden in plain sight:
Recommended by LinkedIn
1. Consider a passion that may or may not be related to your current work.
Whether we realize it or not, what we care most about naturally shows up in nearly everything we do. We may find our life's work written in the language of our passions.
For example, one client, a marketing agency owner, found her idea of impact in the practice that changed her life from the inside out: meditation. She's writing a book on the topic to help others discover the benefits she discovered. It wasn't an insight or process directly related to marketing, but to what she felt most passionate about sharing. And freely sharing her core passion (meditation and personal growth) alongside her practice area (marketing) is attracting aligned clients with the same values—who just happen to need what she offers.
Try it: Beyond your usual work role, what are you passionate about? What do you love doing? What matters most to you? (If you're not sure, consider how you spend your time, especially before or after work hours.) What activities or roles give you energy? Within that passion, is there something you want to create or change? Is there a message you deeply want others to know? How might you share it?
2. Reflect on a challenge that changed your life.
On the other hand, we often find our life's work in our deepest struggles. Perhaps you overcame a significant challenge in the past; perhaps you're working through one now. Please don't share your most painful secrets before you're ready, but do take some private reflection time to consider whether a major challenge in your life—personal or professional—might hold the seed of your idea of impact. Your growth and lessons learned might uniquely help someone else going through that challenge as well.
For example, one client, an attorney, had reached the pinnacle of outward success, but on the inside was barely hanging on. Through a courageous (private) journey through rehab, facing childhood trauma, and holistic healing, he is now publicly sharing his story to empower others to create authentic connections with others rather than suffering in silence. The result is a whole new brand and speaking platform—and a renewed sense of service & purpose.
Try it: Name a major challenge you have overcome in your life—one that is meaningful to you. Looking back, what lessons could you share with others on a similar journey? If you're going through a major challenge, are you willing to write down your experiences along the way, as this potential lesson or idea is writing your life?
3. Identify what your favorite clients have in common.
To literally see what's hidden in plain sight, take a look at the clients you work best with. Do you find yourselves following a similar process or sharing similar stories with them that they have found particularly impactful? For example, do they tend to have a similar specific challenge you're able to help them solve? If you can identify that unique challenge, your solution may very well be the beginning of your idea of impact—and maybe even an industry-changing new paradigm.
Try It: Think of the clients you love working with the most. What, beyond personal demographics, do they have in common? Do they tend to come from the same micro industry, or face the same specific challenge, or have the same values? If so, do you have a message or process that has specifically worked well for these clients—and might possibly work well for others with in similar situations?
Bonus: If you've tried answering these questions and you still feel stuck, consider asking two or three trusted others to answer these questions about you. And then offer to do the same for them. It's a tremendous gift to reflect back the genius of others so they can truly see it. Plus, it's much easier to see what makes others unique than it is to see it for ourselves!
Remember, discovering your idea of impact is worth the time it takes. Sharing it will not just activate your ideal clients; it will activate you.
