How Do I Get Started on Social Media?
Back in 2021 Gary Vaynerchuk shared why he believed that every business should be on social media. This was great advice back then and even better advice for today. Gary Vee explains in the above video the economic truth that social media provides "free" distribution of content to a wider and wider audience of people likely to buy from you over the long term. If a business owner establishes a value-based presence on social media the cost savings versus other forms of attention (i.e., ads) is substantial.
Every Business Needs to Be On Social Media. - Gary Vaynerchuk
So what's holding you back? It's just not as easy as it sounds. Everyone says how easy it is to just hop on social media. But is it really? Well Yes and No. What is Your Next Move for taking your business offline to online? Would it be as simple as just creating a profile on your favorite platform? Seems like it should be that simple but really it isn’t.
When I was first introduced to social media, the general consensus from thought leaders in my industry was to just pick one platform and master that and then go to the next one. But that doesn’t really work because now my target audience is on several platforms. Potential leads will go to the other platforms and look for me. If I’m on LinkedIn and my audience is on both LinkedIn and Facebook. A presence on both platforms legitimizes that I am a serious business. They expect me to have some type of presence on Facebook and LinkedIn. While the actual average varies depending on age, demographics, geography and more your future customers are on more than one platform.
According to Backlinko's 2024 study, the average social media user engages with 6.7 different platforms at least monthly.
According to Backlinko's 2024 study, the average social media user engages with 6.7 different platforms at least monthly. The same study highlights differences based on age with users aged 16-24 accessing an average of 7.5 platforms monthly, while those aged 16-64 access 6.7 globally. Usage also varies based on geography. For example, Brazil boasts the highest average at 8.1 platforms per user, while Japan sits at 3.5, the lowest. The US falls around the global average at 6.7.
The other thing to remember is that different people actually prefer different types of content. Your audience has different learning styles and will gravitate towards different platforms based on their preferences. While there is no singular, universally accepted mapping of learning styles to specific social media platforms, research suggests some broad connections.
In a 2003 study on multimedia learning Mayer found that visuals enhance learning, especially for complex topics. Visual learners enjoy platforms such as Pinterest, Instagram and YouTube because they offer visual heavy content.
But how does a busy entrepreneur “eat the elephant” and push past overwhelm?
The point here is that one platform is not enough. But how does a busy entrepreneur “eat the elephant” and push past overwhelm to leverage the free content distribution systems of social media that Gary Vee talks about?
Here’s exactly how to get started on social media.
It’s simple. Here’s exactly how to get started on social media.

When I first started on social media it was haphazard. I started on Facebook. Set up the profile, uploaded the images, wrote the mission statement and tried to make everything match. But then I decided it was beneficial to post on Instagram because it was great for sharing visual content. The problem was now I had to go through the exact same process over again. I could not secure my chosen handle because someone else had it. This repeated itself for each platform. YouTube, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter) over and over. Each time diluting the brand, confusing the message and using different images on multiple platforms. It was a M-E-S-S. A mess, I might add I am still to this day cleaning up. My point is that you don’t have to repeat my mistakes. I’ve taken the hits and the bruises and have shared that knowledge here with you in this article.
So, what’s Your Next Move? Well, get started today. Don’t wait another second. Securing your digital real estate on the intranet is Your Next Move. Once you have your Digital Real Estate established it will be much easier to start creating content. Just create and load. There are plenty of amazing content creators out there to show you the ropes. Likewise there will be courses on the details. But honestly I have found that the best way to get better at content creation is to find a few people whose content you enjoy on each of your platforms, watch what they do and replicate. There is no doubt that your initial posts will probably be bad, I dare say horrible. When I look back at some of my old content sometimes it makes me laugh, sometimes it makes me cry but most of the time it makes me smile. The important thing is to take action. You’ll get better, your content will get better, people will get to know you and YOU will get to know you.
Now What Are You Waiting for? Let’s Get After It!
