How Do I Measure My Effectiveness As A Hotel or Restaurant Manager - Q&A with Andy.

How Do I Measure My Effectiveness As A Hotel or Restaurant Manager - Q&A with Andy.

I often get people sending me messages, whether as listeners of the podcast, connections on LinkedIn or clients (or contacts of clients) for advice on their own leadership or career development.

Which gave me an idea.

There is no way that these people are the only ones expereincing the very same problem, right? So why not share my response to those people with a wider audience.

After all, if I can help more people than the one asking the question, that's a win, right?

As a leadership coach, I can help accelerate the development of you or your people and help you create the phenomenal business you deserve. Let's have a chat and see how I can help you directly.

So, I had an idea of why not share some of those questions with my wider audience and this is me giving this a go.

I would love to know if you have ever experienced any of these areas and whether this helps you out.

Let's dive in...

"Andy, what are your top strategies for dealing with conflict within a team? Everyday I find myself mediating between differing opinions. How should I deal with it."

When it comes to handling team conflicts, I've found that open communication is always the best option. You're job as a leader is about creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their views - and are respectful of others. I always encourage clients and their people to voice their opinions respectfully and listen to each other with an open mind. It's not just about finding a middle ground; sometimes, it's about understanding different perspectives and coming up with a solution that might be even better than what anyone else had individually proposed.

Remember, conflict isn't always negative; it can lead to growth and innovation when managed well - and thats the tricky bit. Begin by showing that you respect others opinons and demonstrating the behaviours you want to see in others and actively discourage responses that are not.

"Hi Andy, what skills should I focus on to remain marketable? I feel the need to evolve to keep up with industry trends continually."

In today's job market, adaptability and continuous learning are crucial. Whilst It's important to stay abreast of industry trends and changes, I'd say a focus on building a diverse set of soft skills, including leadership, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence, will stand you in good stead. There is a reason that these skills are highly valued across various industries. Additionally, never underestimate the power of strong communication skills – articulating your ideas clearly and effectively is always in demand.

"You often talk about the importance of understanding others and emotional intelligence. What role does emotional intelligence play in leadership, and how can I develop mine?"

Emotional intelligence plays a pivotal role in leadership. It's all about understanding and managing your own emotions while empathising with others. It helps you navigate complex dynamics, build stronger teams, and foster a more positive work environment.

Developing emotional intelligence starts with your self-awareness – being conscious of your emotions and reactions and understanding why you feel a certain way and how your behaviour impacts others.

From there, it's about practising empathy, actively listening to your team, and responding thoughtfully. Remember, leadership is as much about hearts as it is about minds.

Our mission at Velo Leadership is to create a culture that helps your business and its people thrive. Let's chat about how we can do that for your business.

"I’m an area manager and I am wondering how I can keep a team of managers engaged and motivated?”

Keeping a remote team motivated requires trust, communication, and recognition.

It also relies on your ability to connect and align your direct reports with the business vision and purpose. Beyond that, trust your team and give them the autonomy to manage their own tasks as much as possible. When we feel that our people are disengaged, there is a tendence to get invovled and this can sometimes stray into what is seen as micromanaging. If you let them get on with theri work, it shows confidence in their abilities.

Regular check-ins are vital too, but these shouldn't just be about work progress; they should also be about connecting personally.

Lastly, recognition goes a long way. Celebrate their successes, no matter how small. A motivated team is one that feels seen, heard, and appreciated, even from a distance.

"As a new manager, I'm exploring ways to gauge my effectiveness. Andy, how can I measure this in a meaningful way?"

Measuring leadership effectiveness isn't just about business outcomes - let's make that clear straight away. It's also about the growth and satisfaction of your team. One effective way to understand how effective you are is to seek regular feedback from your team. This could be through one-on-ones or anonymous surveys. Pay attention to team morale and engagement levels too as they are strong indicators of effective leadership.

Additionally, reflect on your personal growth – are you evolving as a leader? The best leaders are those who continually strive to improve themselves and positively impact those around them.
