As the climate crisis increases the likelihood of extreme weather and blurs the lines between summer and winter, is it time for fashion to move away from traditional seasons?

Fashion brands and retailers face similar challenges as the public chooses the most appropriate outfit for the day based on unpredictable weather. Many UK retailers have reported a sales slump as consumers choose not to buy new summer clothes. As the climate crisis makes weather patterns more unpredictable, stagnant sales due to abnormal temperatures may become a global trend in the coming years.

Climate change is causing more frequent and severe weather phenomena around the world.

Last week, Uniqlo parent Fast Retailing blamed a sharp drop in profits in its Greater China business on "weak consumer demand and abnormal weather."

As consumers continue to tighten their belts and spend more selectively, and as the weather becomes more unpredictable, the fashion industry may soon have no choice but to stop planning price cuts based on specific seasons.

How can textile manufacturers respond to the shift in consumer demand brought about by global warming?

 

1. Sustainable Materials

Shift to e-co friend material, such as organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, or recycled polyester. These materials have a lower environmental impact and appeal to environmentally conscious consumers.

The study states that due to the lack of a comprehensive circular textile policy framework, Bangladesh loses up to $5 billion in potential export revenue from recycled textiles each year.

Such a policy would incentivize the recycling of post-industrial textile waste. To remain competitive, the textile industry must formalize the informal sector.

 

2. Transparency and Traceability


Transparency

By being open about their sourcing, production processes, and environmental impact, manufacturers can build trust with consumers increasingly concerned about their purchases' ethical implications. Detailed information on where and how materials are sourced, the working conditions of laborers, and the environmental footprint of production can reassure consumers that they are making responsible choices.

Traceability

The ability to trace a product's journey from raw material to finished garment provides concrete evidence of the manufacturer’s claims. Consumers are more likely to trust brands that can demonstrate the ethical and sustainable practices behind their products.

 Use sustainable packaging solutions like biodegradable or reusable packaging materials to reduce waste.
