How Do You Define Work-Life Balance?

Work-life balance is a term that’s frequently discussed but often misunderstood. For many professionals, especially those with over five years of experience, the challenge of achieving balance between work and personal life can feel like an ongoing struggle. You may feel torn between your career goals, the expectations of your role, and your need for personal time, family, and well-being. The pressure to excel in both areas often leads to burnout, stress, and frustration.

In my work as an Executive and Corporate Coach, I've had the privilege of guiding professionals through this exact challenge. Over the years, I’ve observed the common pitfalls and developed strategies to help individuals redefine work-life balance on their own terms. If you’ve ever asked yourself, “How do I achieve work-life balance in a meaningful way?” then this article is for you.

In this article, we’ll explore:

  1. The key challenges professionals face in defining and maintaining work-life balance.
  2. Practical strategies for overcoming these challenges and realigning your professional and personal life.
  3. Insights from my EmpowerU coaching program on how to establish a balanced, fulfilling lifestyle that aligns with your career goals and personal values.

The Challenges of Defining Work-Life Balance

When I speak to professionals about work-life balance, I often hear a common sentiment: “I can’t seem to find the right balance.” This challenge is particularly common among mid-career professionals, executives, and entrepreneurs, who often juggle multiple responsibilities—be it leading a team, managing a growing business, or achieving personal milestones.

Here are some of the most common challenges I’ve encountered in my work with clients:

1. The "Always-On" Culture

Many professionals feel they are constantly “on.” The rise of remote work, digital communication, and the always-connected world we live in has blurred the lines between professional and personal time. Checking emails after hours, taking calls on weekends, and being expected to respond to work-related issues at any time can lead to a feeling of being constantly “on-call.”

2. Unclear Boundaries

Without clear boundaries, work and personal life can easily become intertwined. Professionals often feel guilty when they prioritize their personal time, or conversely, they may neglect their personal needs in favor of meeting work demands. The lack of well-established boundaries leads to burnout and resentment.

3. Career Ambition vs. Personal Needs

For many professionals, there is a tension between career ambition and personal needs. The desire for promotions, career advancements, and financial success often drives individuals to overcommit to their work, leaving little time for personal well-being, family, or hobbies.

4. The Fear of Missing Opportunities

Another common challenge is the fear of missing out on career opportunities. Professionals often feel that if they take time off or reduce their work hours, they’ll fall behind in their career, miss out on a key project, or lose visibility within the company. This fear can create a constant internal struggle between work and personal life.

5. Unrealistic Expectations

Many professionals set unrealistic expectations for themselves when it comes to work-life balance. They think that balance means perfectly dividing their time between work and personal life. This all-or-nothing mindset can set them up for failure, as it’s nearly impossible to achieve a perfect balance every single day.

Redefining Work-Life Balance: A New Approach

While these challenges are real, I believe there is a way forward that is not only practical but empowering. The key to work-life balance is not about achieving perfection or trying to split your time into equal parts; it’s about aligning your values with your actions and finding flexibility that works for your unique lifestyle.

Here’s how I recommend redefining work-life balance:

1. Start with Clarity: Know Your Values

The first step toward redefining your work-life balance is gaining clarity on what truly matters to you. What are your personal and professional priorities? What do you value most in your career, and what do you value in your personal life?

Many professionals make the mistake of focusing only on external expectations and pressures—whether that’s advancing in their careers, pleasing their bosses, or meeting family demands. However, without a clear understanding of your own values, you’ll always be pulled in different directions.

Action Tip: Take a moment to reflect on your values. Write down the top 3-5 things that matter most to you—both professionally and personally. These could be family, personal growth, health, financial freedom, leadership, or work satisfaction. Once you have clarity on your values, you’ll have a roadmap for balancing the demands of work and personal life.

2. Set Boundaries and Stick to Them

In order to protect your time and energy, it’s essential to set firm boundaries between work and personal life. The ability to say “no” is a skill that many professionals need to develop. This doesn’t mean abandoning work responsibilities, but it means learning how to communicate your limits and protect your personal time.

Action Tip: Block off time in your calendar for personal activities—whether that’s spending time with family, pursuing hobbies, or simply relaxing. If you’re constantly asked to take on more work, be honest and set expectations around your availability. Set aside time for yourself, and stick to it.

3. Embrace Flexibility

Rather than aiming for a rigid balance between work and life, embrace flexibility. There will be times when work demands more of your time, and there will be other times when personal commitments need to take priority. Flexibility means being adaptable and adjusting your priorities without feeling guilty about it.

Action Tip: Practice flexibility by adjusting your work and personal commitments based on your immediate needs. If you need to work late on a project one week, adjust your personal plans accordingly, but ensure you take time off when the project is completed.

4. Delegate and Share the Load

You don’t have to do it all on your own. Whether at work or home, learn to delegate tasks and share the load with others. This not only lightens your workload but also empowers others in your professional and personal life.

Action Tip: At work, delegate tasks to your team or colleagues when appropriate. At home, communicate with your family or partner about how you can share responsibilities. The more you delegate, the more time you’ll have for the things that truly matter.

5. Let Go of Perfection

One of the biggest obstacles to achieving work-life balance is the belief that it must look perfect. In reality, balance is a dynamic state—some days may require more work, while others may allow you to focus more on your personal life. Accepting that there is no perfect formula is liberating.

Action Tip: Shift your mindset from perfectionism to progress. Focus on making small, consistent improvements in both your work and personal life. Celebrate your successes, and forgive yourself for the days when things don’t go according to plan.

Vijay Singh Great article! I often use the term "work-life harmony" with my clients to allow space for flexibility. Their values are constant, but their opportunities to maximize matching activities and values are ever shifting. Would love your thoughts!
