How does savings interest tax work?

If you have money in a savings account it will (hopefully) be accruing some interest. Most people in the UK will not have to pay tax on this, but some whose interest goes over the tax-free limit, will.

If you earn less than £17,570 in income per year, such as from a job, then your starting rate for tax-free savings interest is £5,000.
