How to Effectively Communicate Your Boundaries
Part 4 - Setting Boundaries series
In this week’s newsletter, we will focus on effectively communicating the boundaries you have set for yourself, following the advice I shared with you in my previous three newsletters from this series.
Always remember that effectively communicating boundaries at work involves clarity, consistency, and respect. Here are some steps to help you communicate boundaries with your colleagues.
Choose the Right Time and Place
Bring up sensitive boundaries in private to avoid embarrassment or defensiveness. Remember, choose a time when neither you nor your colleague is stressed or preoccupied.
Before you start the conversation, make sure you are in a state of emotional equanimity. Stay calm and polite, maintaining a balanced and respectful tone, even if you feel frustrated.
Communicate Clearly
Be direct and specific. Use clear and concise language to state your boundaries. For example, "I need to leave by 5 PM to pick up my kids."
Offer context. Sometimes explaining why a boundary is important can help others understand and respect it. For example, "I need to finish work by 5 PM because I have evening classes."
It also helps to frame your boundaries positively, so instead of saying what you can't do, focus on what you can do. For example, "I can respond to emails until 6 PM" instead of "I won't check emails after 6 PM."
Remember to use "I" statements: This helps to express your needs without sounding accusatory. For example, "I feel overwhelmed when meetings go over time."
Be Consistent
Follow through. Stick to your boundaries once you’ve set them. Inconsistency can lead to confusion and a lack of respect for them. Remember to reiterate them as necessary. Sometimes, it takes more than one conversation for boundaries to be respected.
So there you go - remember that setting and respecting boundaries will help you to achieve your ideal performance state, and if that is the case, everyone wins, you, your team and your business!
