How the Election Could Shape Technology and What it Means for You

It’s hard to believe the national elections are only 6 days away! By now over 50 million have already cast their ballots in early voting, mail-in or in person.

Whoever gets elected will have major consequences on business and the economy.

(Please note controversial issues like immigration and abortion rights will not be discussed here).

Artificial Intelligence and automation are center stage in shaping America’s business future. From healthcare diagnostics to manufacturing, AI based automation is helping create efficiencies and transforming work across every sector.

The national election presents voters with contrasting visions of how AI and automation should evolve under the influence of either former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris.

Let’s examine each.

The Case for Donald Trump: Prioritizing Business Freedom and Innovation

Trump emphasizes deregulation and free-market innovation. He believes that reducing regulations will allow businesses to quickly adopt and advance AI technologies, enhancing U.S. competitiveness, particularly against countries like China.

Trump’s argument extends to the manufacturing sector, where AI-powered automation has already revitalized factories by increasing efficiency and reducing costs. He sees AI as a powerful ally for U.S. manufacturing, capable of reinvigorating “Made in America” initiatives by using automated systems and robotics to lower production costs. Supporters of this approach argue that Trump’s stance allows for swift adoption of AI, allowing the U.S. to outpace other countries in tech advancements while retaining jobs by bolstering industries poised for automation.

The Case for Kamala Harris: A Responsible, Regulated Path for AI Integration

In contrast, Harris advocates for ethical oversight and regulation in AI development. She stresses the importance of protecting workers from bias and job displacement associated with automation. Her strategy includes establishing retraining programs for workers affected by AI and ensuring that technological advancements are fair and secure. She aims to balance progress with social responsibility.

This approach reflects her focus on protecting workers’ rights while harnessing AI’s potential for social good. Her administration would likely establish task forces to work alongside tech companies, ensuring that automation serves American workers without stripping away human-driven jobs. Harris’s supporters argue that her approach is future-proof, balancing rapid tech advancement with considerations for fairness and data privacy.

What's At Stake

The election will determine whether the U.S. pursues a rapid, less regulated path for AI or a more cautious, ethical approach. This choice will significantly influence how AI shapes various sectors in American society.

Trump’s approach appeals to voters who view AI as a necessary tool for U.S. economic competitiveness. Harris’s platform appeals to those who believe that a responsible, worker-focused approach can help the U.S. avoid the social pitfalls associated with unchecked technological change.

Will the U.S. become a hub of rapid AI advancement with little restriction, or will it opt for a regulated, ethically conscious AI future? The answer may well depend on next week’s vote.

No matter the outcome next week, let's brainstorm how you can use AI and automation to reach your goals.

I invite you to keep an open mind and view this article as a resource for deeper insight. My goal here is to present a clear, unbiased look at each candidate's approach to AI and technology, not to advocate for either side. Writing from a business consultant's perspective, I aim to highlight how each policy could uniquely impact AI’s future in America. Let's explore these perspectives together and consider what they might mean for tech innovation going forward.

A knife can be a useful tool or a weapon for murder. Nuclear energy can be harnessed to power whole cities or destroy them. So it is with AI. It’s all about how AI is being applied, and the underlying intentions of humans. AI can greatly benefit humankind, or it can cause serious harm if used to further greedy, egomaniacal, authoritarian ambitions. Safeguards must be in place. Character, honesty, integrity, ethics and intentions really, really matter when we choose who we want to lead this country we love. 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙
