How to Ensure Long Term Donor Engagement and Retention at Your Nonprofit
Universally, when a donor gives a first time donation, they're only 20% likely to give a second donation. And there's only a 40% retention rate in nonprofits.
That means that nonprofits are doing all of this work to get people to the donation page and to get them to give and 60% of those donors are leaving. That’s a lot of hard work wasted.
Luckily I had Christa Stelzmuller on episode 69 of the Lead with Heart podcast and she shared some strategies for increasing donor engagement and retention.
Christa is the chief technology officer of Charity: Water and with her strong focus on innovation and mission-driven work, she is a standout leader in the nonprofit sector.
If you want to check that out, I’ll add the episode player below so you can tune into the full episode where we discuss leveraging technology to create a donor experience and empowering women in tech.
In this article, we’re going to learn how to ensure long term donor engagement and retention at your nonprofit:
1. How to Keep Donors Engaged
Christa explains that where Charity: Water has excelled at keeping donors engaged and informed about the mission is by always creating that follow-up touch point and by ensuring that the transparency they promised is followed up on.
“We publish every project that gets deployed today. We publish it on the website and make it available for any user to dig in and understand.” - Christa Stelzmuller
Charity: Water also shares on-the-ground stories from their teams that are working in different parts of the world.
“We try to make sure that we're always bringing back that human connection to the donation.” - Christa Stelzmuller
Christa explains that human connection is a big part of engagement.
“There are so many ways [...] to make donors recognize that you appreciate what they've contributed no matter how big or small.” - Christa Stelzmuller
No matter the size of the donation, you want to make sure that the donor knows that you haven't forgotten about them and that their donation really made an impact.
Christa explains that impact reporting can feel very generic in many cases, and it has to be made to feel personal.
“If you can develop that personal connection between the people who are impacted and the people who donated to help drive that impact, it's really fostering that connection that I think drives retention and engagement long term.” - Christa Stelzmuller
This is why sharing stories of impact is so vital.
“Those stories are so important to help drive that feeling of human connection.” - Christa Stelzmuller
2. The Role Technology Plays in Donor Retention
Technology is key to helping facilitate some of that personalization and to make donors feel like they have made an impact on the mission.
“Doing this at scale, I think really requires technology.” - Christa Stelzmuller
Christa explains that Charity: Water was committed to this personalization early on and manual reports would be prepared for donors.
“When you're trying to do it for any donor, at any donation size, you really need to think about a technical solution that's going to enable you to take that donation, understand where it landed, and how that donation was eventually used.” - Christa Stelzmuller
This would be extremely difficult information to share with your donors at scale without technology.
“Any nonprofit that is thinking about growth long term and being able to deliver on those promises to a growing body of donors will have to be thinking about technology to make that happen.” - Christa Stelzmuller
3. Optimizing Your Website for Donor Retention
A lot of nonprofits struggle with donor retention on their websites. There are a few key things you can set up to optimize this.
The first point Christa makes is to ensure that your brand is front and center.
“Your mission is the product. And so you want to showcase your mission and all the ways that someone may want to explore it, whether it's the history of your organization, whether it's transparency and your financials, whether it's the stories of impact that you can share at a broader scale.” - Christa Stelzmuller
Christa explains that most visitors to the website who are arriving for the first time are there to learn something.
“Structuring your information on your website in a way that helps facilitate what folks want to learn about first is, I think, the best way to approach that overall information hierarchy.” - Christa Stelzmuller
Only as they become more engaged with the content, then do you ask if they want to be a part of the solution.
“But it shouldn't be something you necessarily lead with right from the outset.” - Christa Stelzmuller
In conclusion, don’t let the hard work you put into attracting donors go to waste. By creating meaningful connections, leveraging technology, and optimizing the donor experience, you can increase your donor retention and engagement to ensure long term nonprofit growth and stability and create more impact.

6dThank you for sharing these valuable insights on donor engagement and retention. I completely agree that creating meaningful connections and leveraging technology are key to ensuring long-term nonprofit growth and stability. One additional strategy that I have found effective is to personalize the donor experience by segmenting donors based on their interests and engagement levels. This allows nonprofits to tailor their communication and outreach efforts to each donor, making them feel valued and appreciated. Additionally, regularly showing the impact of their donations and providing opportunities for feedback and input can further strengthen the donor-nonprofit relationship.
