How Firm is Your Foundation?

How Firm is Your Foundation?

How firm is your foundation? This is a question that I ask of every client I coach. Some look at me oddly, like they don't have a clue, and others say, "I have never thought about it." However, before we start building on it or doing any work, I make sure their foundation is rock solid. What I know without any doubt is that no matter what other "materials" are used, what titles or degrees are obtained, physical beauty that is possessed, or finances that are gained, it will never be enough to withstand the storm if the foundation is not built solid.

Building a firm foundation isn't always easy or pleasant. We sometimes have to dig deep to find the "rock" on which to start. While digging deep we often come upon some things that are tough to get through, but it is totally necessary. We must keep going.

I can speak from personal experience. My foundation was shaky at best. It was composed of low self-esteem, no sense of self-worth, and a dysfunctional family life. Later in life I added a degree on top of it, some very impressive titles, and a whole core of people who needed me. However, when the storms started coming and the "winds" started blowing my structure began to sway and crumble.

The good thing about the foundation of life is that you can go back and rebuild it. I rebuilt mine, with faith and a strong relationship with God. I added some self-love, value for myself, and mixed in concrete relationships with those who were positive and wanted the best for me and themselves.

I still get hit by storms sometimes, but I have no fear that I will crumble now. I know what forms my foundation. The materials are of great quality and can withstand the storms and the winds that sometime blow. How do I know? It has been tested and tried more than once since the last rebuild. I am not saying that I will not get worn down again, but I know some things now, including what a strong foundation should entail.

What about your foundation? Are you comfortable with it, or do you need to rebuild as well? If rebuilding is necessary, know that you are not alone. Someone you encounter today or will encounter tomorrow is in need of rebuilding also.

Luke 6:48 ESV..."He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built."

Sometimes there are cracks in the foundation. Tend to them or everything will crumble. At this point; various people are suggesting to use this time as an opportunity to learn a new skill. With two thousand Americans dying every day and regular life on hold? Just because you might have been furloughed does not mean it's time to build a new deck or finish your degree. Look into it yet focus on navigating through this difficult time.
