How to Be a Great ZOOM Conversationalist

How to Be a Great ZOOM Conversationalist

Being a great ZOOM conversationalist is not only a science, but it’s a rare art form. For the overwhelming majority of us, it takes a lot of practice.

There are plenty of small but powerful tricks and strategies you can use to enhance your ZOOM conversations. Not only will you personally enjoy conversations more, but so will the other person. By boosting your ability to have a great ZOOM discussion, you will not only improve your social life, but you will put yourself in a position to enhance your career.

Try injecting these techniques into your ZOOM calls:

  1. Ask great questions. Ideally, you shouldn’t have to do most of the talking during your ZOOM conversations. If you get great at asking well-thought-out questions, the other person will end up doing most of the talking. Make sure to ask open-ended questions that empower the other person to talk. Asking excellent questions is a simple way to keep the person you’re talking with fully engaged in your conversation.
  2. Significantly lower your expectations. When it comes to making “small talk” during your ZOOM calls, we often want to be the most fantastic conversationalist on the planet. It’s not necessary to be the “best” speaker to leave a positive impression through a conversation. By lowering your expectations, you can relax more and have a more natural conversation.
  3. Shut up and listen. Listening is half the battle to being a great conversationalist. Make sure to use proper eye contact (look into the camera!) and pay close attention to what the other person is saying. Try to avoid altogether pondering what you want to say next. If you pause and wait 2 seconds after the other person is done talking, you will force yourself to become a better listener.
  4. Reiterate what’s been said. Take time to verify what you thought you heard. Part of being a great communicator requires that you properly relay information, so the other person knows that what they said was received and understood.
  5. Keep it interesting. Unless there was a recent devastating hurricane in your area, no one is interested in the forecast, so do us all a favor and stop talking about the weather. Instead, have a couple of recent stories ready to go at a moment's notice. To do this, stay on top of current events. Also, if you have an idea of what the other person is passionate about, you can utilize that info too.
  6. Don’t Interrupt. You may be done listening, but the person you’re talking with might not be done speaking. Make sure to wait until the other person is completely done talking before you respond. Just by doing this, the other person will appreciate you.

Being a great conversationalist on ZOOM calls is an important skill to have right now. By continuing to get better, you can advance your career and add more enjoyment to your social life.
