How I'd help my 20 year old self become recognized as a "professional / expert"
If you’re aiming to achieve recognition and respect as an expert, and become a sought-after, paid speaker, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get there:
### Step 1: Define Your Niche and Expertise
- Identify Your Unique Value Proposition (UVP): Start by clarifying what makes you unique. What specific knowledge, experience, or perspective do you bring to your field? This UVP is the foundation of your brand as a speaker.
- Specialize: Focus on a specific niche where you can stand out and provide deep insights. It’s easier to become a recognized expert in a specific area than in a broad field.
### Step 2: Develop a Strong Personal Brand
- Create a Compelling Brand Narrative: Craft a personal story that connects your background, struggles, and successes to your expertise. This narrative should resonate with your target audience.
- Professional Online Presence: Make sure you have a polished LinkedIn profile, a personal website, and active social media accounts that reflect your brand. Regularly share insights, articles, and success stories to build credibility.
### Step 3: Build a Content Strategy
- Blogging and Writing: Start writing articles, blogs, or even consider publishing a book related to your niche. Regularly publishing content positions you as a thought leader.
- Podcasting and Videos: Launch a podcast or a YouTube channel where you discuss topics within your niche. These platforms offer a personal touch and allow you to reach a broader audience.
### Step 4: Network with Industry Leaders
- Attend Industry Conferences and Events: Attend relevant conferences, seminars, and webinars to network with other experts and industry leaders. This keeps you updated and on the radar of event organizers.
- Join Professional Associations: Become an active member of professional organizations related to your field. Contributing to these communities can open doors to speaking opportunities.
### Step 5: Leverage Testimonials and Case Studies
- Collect Testimonials: After every speaking engagement, ask for testimonials from organizers and attendees. Positive feedback builds credibility and trust.
- Showcase Case Studies: Share case studies that demonstrate how your expertise has helped clients or companies achieve success. This reinforces your authority and impact.
### Step 6: Get Featured in Media
Recommended by LinkedIn
- Pursue Media Opportunities: Pitch yourself to podcasts, blogs, industry magazines, and even local news outlets. Being featured in the media can significantly boost your credibility.
- Guest Blogging: Write guest posts for reputable industry websites to enhance your visibility and authority.
### Step 7: Start Speaking at Smaller Events
- Begin with Local and Free Events: Start by speaking at smaller events, workshops, or webinars, even if they’re unpaid. This helps you build experience, confidence, and a portfolio of speaking engagements.
- Refine Your Speaking Skills: Continuously work on your public speaking skills—practice makes perfect. Consider hiring a speaking coach or joining a group like Toastmasters.
### Step 8: Market Yourself as a Speaker
- Create a Speaker Kit: Put together a professional speaker kit, including a bio, headshots, a list of speaking topics, testimonials, and links to past speaking engagements.
- Actively Seek Speaking Gigs: Pitch yourself to conference organizers, event planners, and companies looking for expert speakers. Regularly browse platforms like SpeakerHub or TEDx for opportunities.
### Step 9: Deliver Outstanding Presentations
- Focus on Value: When you land speaking gigs, always focus on delivering value. Great content, engaging delivery, and actionable takeaways leave a lasting impression and generate word-of-mouth referrals.
- Engage with the Audience: Interact with your audience—Q&A sessions, polls, and live feedback make your presentations more memorable and increase your chances of being invited back or referred to others.
### Step 10: Scale and Diversify
- Expand Your Topics and Offerings: Once established, expand your speaking topics to cover more areas within your niche or related fields. Consider creating workshops, online courses, or coaching programs to diversify your income streams.
- Continue to Innovate: Keep up with industry trends and continuously refine your content and delivery style. Staying ahead of the curve ensures you remain relevant and sought-after in the long term.
By following these steps, you can build your reputation as a credible expert and thought leader, leading to more paid speaking opportunities and greater recognition in your field.

3moWhat would you advise someone to do who has two niches or is trying to transition from an established niche to a new one. In my case I am known as and have a fair amount of proof in the area of inspiration, motivational, ekynote, type talks. However, I have realized that there is more opportunity for paid speaking given my knowledge and over 15 years experience in the area of accessibility and inclusion. Can I use the old stuff in my new kit, or should I have tw kits until I am established speaking about the accessibility advantage? Thanks, Maxwell

3moGreat advice, Frank! Like the steps. I’ve been looking into some other training / programs. I’ll definitely look into these. Purchased a new iPhone holder for videos today, also. 👍🏻👍🏻🥁

3moGreat strategies Frank. I do encourage speakers to get video of their speaking as well as video testimonials. When you have video of your presentations you can self assess, Get feedback from experts like yourself and use some of the content as part of your demo reel. Keep up your great work!

3moMy suggestion is to start with step 1, ask those around you who know you well and can provide feedback that will help you to define what is your UVP (or MVP).
