How to Identify Partners to Promote Your Work

How to Identify Partners to Promote Your Work

Right now, people everywhere are looking for more clients to add to their businesses. Grinding it out on our own can feel futile, which is why it can be powerful to bring in like-mind colleagues to cross-promote your work to each other's audience.

As you create content together - such as hosting joint webinars or writing for each other's blogs, etc. - you build trust with your collective audience. Dov Gordon is an expert on lead generation and discussed how to create these collaborative partnerships (often known as a joint venture, or JV partnerships) with me for my book, Entrepreneurial You.

Included in this week’s newsletter are five steps that Dov recommends you take to assemble your team of collaborators.

Here are Dov’s tips to help you form your cross-promotion group.

  1. Seek out your ideal group members. Sign up for other people’s newsletters, and familiarize yourself with their work. Look for people who seem to be willing to help promote others, and stay away from those looking to make a quick sale. Your goal is to create a community of people looking to foster long-term relationships with their audience. After a while, reach out and start a conversation. Talk about something specific you learned from following their content and gauge their interest in potentially collaborating.
  2. Prioritize quality. If you want to start cross-promoting colleagues, don’t expect business to go from 0 to 60. Assess where you are and find partners both a little ahead and a little behind you. The most important thing is that you all hold the same standard of quality. Grow together, and be willing to work on this as a multi-year process. Instant success doesn’t happen overnight.
  3. Create Content Together. You can start collaborating by featuring each other's work on LinkedIn, or writing about each other, or perhaps organizing a joint webinar or LinkedIn Live, so you can share their work with your audience, and vice versa. If desired, you can set up special registration pages for webinars to track where the attendee found out about the event. You can find topics to discuss based on what the other person specializes in, and perhaps survey your audience to determine what they'd be most interested in hearing about.
  4. Start it now- you’ll never “be ready.” Dov’s first teleseminar had three attendees. Even if the response is small at first, keep going! When you are starting out, seek to discover what needs you can serve for people. You learn as you go, so it's important to get started.
