How To Know If You Need To Pivot Your Business

As entrepreneurs, we all hit that moment when things feel off. Pivoting your business doesn’t mean it’s a failure, it could mean your business is growing and needs some adjustment. It’s very normal for a company to pivot for various reasons.

To be successful, your business needs to grow and make more money. But how do you know if it’s just a rough patch or time to make a real shift? This time, I’m going to tell you 6 ways to know if you need to pivot your business.

1.Target Audience Is Changing

When you first start your business, you must have a target audience that you aim for. Sometimes, the people who once loved your business aren’t showing up anymore or maybe you’re realizing they’re not your ideal customers.

When I was consulting on TikTok marketing, people saw me as just "that TikTok girl." To fix this, I shifted my focus to TikTok for businesses and everything changed. If your audience doesn’t match your goals, reevaluate your audience and your products, it’s time to pivot.

2.Revenue or Leads Have Plateaued

If your numbers are stuck or declining, maybe something isn’t clicking anymore. Are you offering the right services? Is your pricing out of sync with your market? Do people think that it is worth it to invest in it?

During the TikTok ban issue in 2020, there was a massive drop in sales in my business. So, I expanded to teaching short-form video content across platforms. The shift was not easy, but it worked. If your revenue is dropping due to some external or internal issue you have to be ready for changes.

3. No ROI On Marketing Efforts

Having a marketing budget is great for growing your business. But, what is the effort that you spent that didn’t as much as the feedback you got? Business without an ROI is dead. Pouring money and time into ads, social media, and campaigns with nothing to show for it?

For a startup company, it may not cause a big problem, because they need to grow as fast as possible. But for a small regular business, you have to rethink whether your return on investment is bigger than your marketing efforts therefore you could make more money and grow your business.

4. Negative Feedback or Silence Feedback

Unengaged or unhappy customers are another signal that you need to change your products. If your audience isn’t resonating with your content or products, probably they are not satisfied and don’t feel the product is not helping.

I had to adjust my courses when my client didn’t feel satisfied and happy about it. It was a hard truth, but it pushed me to improve my products. Feedback, even the tough kind, is valuable to grow your business. Listen, adapt, and keep moving forward.

5. Feel Stuck or Uninspired

Does your business still excite you? If not, it might be burnout, or it could mean you’re ready for something new.

When I feel this way, I take a step back. Reevaluate and take some breaks from your business. Sometimes, stepping away is the clarity you need so you can see things more clearly and generate new ideas.

6. Outgrown Business Model

Sometimes, the way you run your business doesn’t fit your life or goals anymore. What worked before might not work now. Maybe your business has grown, or your priorities have changed, and it’s time to adjust how things are done.

I wanted more freedom for myself and my team, so I adjusted how we worked to match our goals better. If your current way of running your business doesn’t feel right anymore, it might be time to think about what changes you can make to better match your goals.

Pivoting isn’t a failure, it's growth. It’s about refining your path, not abandoning it. If any of these signs resonate with you, take a step back, evaluate, and start making those shifts. Change can be scary, but it’s often the best thing you can do for your business and yourself.
