How a mentor can change your life!

I had an opportunity to meet my mentor Sanjay Mitra - Leadership Coach and Team Coach , this week at Hyderabad in person, on the backdrop of his seminars to transform lives of many.

Sanjay travels extensively on his quest to transforming organizations & leaders across the world. And hence this meet was special and led me to spend few mins to summarize my personal takeaways. Hoping this might help you reignite your ambitions and a possible call for action to be more, do more...

1. Biggest upgrade you can do is not your car or home but is on yourself:

Since we met after a while, we sync'd on various areas including what did we improve in our lives. Its good to get a new swanky car or a lavish house, serves as present to handwork we are putting in. Those serve as motivation and needed in some cases. However, he highlighted a fact that, best upgrade you can have is to upgrade self. What did I learn new, what skill did I acquire which i didn't have before, what books I read recently.

"Self-upgrade is the single biggest influencer of quality of not just your own life but of your family and inner friend circle. It will define & re-define your lifestyle."

2. Its the mindset that matters - Title, Salary and Roles are by product of mindset.

We all have career aspirations and hence goals. Goals generally are the outcome or end state and reflect in title, salary or scope of responsibility, sometimes positional power. According to Sanjay, is important to have goals, however, outcomes are driven by the mindset. Which means, feeling & behaving like you are already at the next level is essential for the goals to materialize. In fact, this is true for anything is life, but this is more visible and apparent in career growth aspect, where we need to be more deliberate and convinced about where do we want to go.

Its your mindset that precedes the career goals & not the other way. Whether you are looking for a promotion, raise or a larger responsibility, move your mindset to that level to start with - Behave and operate like you are are already there in terms of skills, values and relationships. Then, the outcomes would be matter of time...

3. Don't loose time - For, time is the only thing that can't be redeemed

While this is intuitive and common sensical in most aspects of life, when we see it from the lenses of an ambitious individual with precise goals, this makes a specific callout that you got to drive every quarter and year of your career from being in drivers seat.

Whether its career advancement, project execution or a success story you would like to create for your team, company - you got to be super clear about time and in some select cases, be frugal.

Remember - In addition to your own career, your company's business and your team's careers are also on the line when it comes to success of initiatives you drive. Hence, time is money, in literal sense. Which means, if things don't workout the way you planned, cut the losses and move onto the next ones but don't endlessly push forward.

These 3 were the gems of our short meet before he moved on to his next big session to mentor/coach. On top of this, I always believed its about people. Its about how you build relations, influence and create win-win with persistence & vision that would make others want to follow you genuinely.

I sincerely hope that this quick read helped you trigger some thoughts in your mind as you recharge yourself over this weekend and reflect upon. Like like would say, If you want something, just go get it (full stop)
