How the most successful animal-related charities are shifting their focus

My dear friend and co-founder Jennifer Xia Spradling (she / her) and I are now more than 6 years (wow!) into founding FreeWill, and I wanted to share one of the things that has surprised me most about our work: we've learned that animal-related organizations do phenomenally well in planned giving -- perhaps better than any other type of NGO in the United States. In fact, more than $460 million has been committed to animal-related organizations through FreeWill, double the next highest category.

As a result, we are seeing many of the most successful animal-related organizations (and their boards of directors) pivot to a much greater focus and investment in planned giving, seeing this as the most important strategy for long-term financial sustainability for their organizations. Here's why:

  1. We as a society are sitting at the precipice of "the great wealth transfer." In 2023, the oldest Baby Boomers turn 77 (about the average life expectancy for a man in the US), and that whole generation is poised to pass on more than $70 trillion over the next two decades. One estimate by Cerulli Associates puts the amount of those funds going to charity at north of $10 trillion.
  2. Pet owners have demonstrated a higher willingness to donate in their wills compared to non-owners. FreeWill's 2022 Planned Giving report found that pet owners are 55% more likely to include a charitable bequest -- a figure that astounded even us.
  3. Pet owners often associate the animals they care for as part of their family, but cannot direct gifts to their pets as they would their children, both for legal reasons and because their pets often predecease them. The result is the search for an organization who represents the legacy of their beloved pet(s).
  4. Pets give pet owners an extra reason to get their affairs in order. Those with pets often choose to assign a "pet guardian" in their estate plans in order to make sure their pet is cared for should they pass away. As you can see in the example below, this provides an excellent reason to remind donors to make their plans!

5. There is a truly massive opportunity for lesser-known animal organizations to benefit disproportionately. Many animal lovers care passionately, but may not have deep existing ties to a specific charity. Therefore, animal organizations who can be top of mind at the very moment when these folks are making their estate plans can often generate millions in gifts, even from folks who are not previously committed donors.

Well, considering that I work for a foundation that was created because a wealthy, very generous couple left almost their entire estate to animal welfare, I can't argue with these findings. 😉

Thank you for featuring 2nd Chance 4 Pets (www.2ndchance4pets.org) and emphasizing the importance of preparing for the possibility that pets might outlive their owners. More than 500,000 pets are surrendered to US animal shelters every year simply because they outlive their owners. There has been a significant increase in orphaned pets since the Pandemic started as well. We appreciate FreeWill and the great service you provide. Together we can save pets’ lives and provide pet owners with peace of mind.

Patrick Schmitt: Tom Patterson and I agree that being Archie’s godfather effectively makes you a pet owner.
