How MTP (Massive Transformative Purpose) Fuels Exponential Growth and Impact

In the ever-evolving landscape of business, tech organizations face immense pressure to scale their impact and productivity. While traditional approaches like technology upgrades and efficiency tweaks could drive results, they often fall short of making a remarkable transformative shift.

Transformational change with a visionary purpose propels them to new heights of growth and impact. Amidst this pursuit, the concept of MTP (Massive Transformative Purpose) is a guiding beacon that catalyzes organizations to achieve what seems to be unattainable.

Let’s explore how MTP can serve as a driving force for exponential growth and impact.

What is a Massive Transformative Purpose (MTP)?

MTP (Massive Transformative Purpose) reflects an organization’s highest aspiration: the core, defining the purpose of its existence.

It is considered to serve as the soul of the organization with a guiding North Star that shapes every innovation, decision, and action. It is more than just a set of goals or a mission statement. It defines the organization’s overarching reason for its existence that transcends its brand value, profit margin, or market share.

MTP revolves around a compelling vision to solve a significant environmental or social problem aligned with the organization’s strategy, values, and operations.

Here’s what makes up an MTP:

1) Massive: It’s audaciously aspirational and huge

2) Transformative:  It has the power to radically transform a community, an entire industry, or the world

3) Purpose: It is driven by clear “why” - a reason for its existence with a higher calling that goes beyond profit

MTP reflects an organization’s highest aspiration: the core, defining purpose of its existence. Finding an MTP can be seen as a novel and perhaps more interesting way of asking yourself the following questions:

  • What do I care about?
  • What am I meant to do?

“We live in an increasingly secular age in which emerging generations want more meaning in their work lives. Today, this desire remains largely unfulfilled. We believe being part of an organization or enterprise driven by an MTP can help fill that void by providing all-important context and meaning.”

– Excerpt from Exponential Organizations 2.0: The New Playbook for 10x Growth and Impact by Salim Ismail.

The MTP focuses on what the company does. It is declarative in nature. It doesn’t say “We are going to try,” but rather, “We will” emphasizing the call to action for the community to have a common goal to solve a problem, realizing the people’s pain points and adding value to their lives by the organization's offerings, products or services.

“Apple and TED, in particular, have created enterprise-specific ecosystems based on their MTPs. That is, they have created communities so excited about being part of their products or services that they pull those products and services out from the core organization and assume ownership of them, complete with marketing, support services, and even design and manufacturing.”

- Excerpt from Exponential Organizations 2.0: The New Playbook for 10x Growth and Impact.

Let’s have a look at the position statements of top organizations highlighting their MTPs:

Google: “Organize the world’s information.”

Tesla: “Accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”

SpaceX: “To make life multi-planetary.”

TED: “Ideas Worth Spreading”

X Prize Foundation: “Bring about radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity.”

Singularity University: “Positively impact one billion people.”

At first glance, these statements may seem to align with the trend in recent years to rewrite corporate statements to be short, simpler, and more generalized. But on closer inspection, you will note that each of the statements is also very aspirational.

None states what the organization does, but rather what it aspires to accomplish.

Why do organizations need an MTP?

  • Inspiration and direction: It gives an organization a clear direction by uniting the team around a noble cause inspiring them to have a laser-focused approach to prioritize innovative thinking, growth strategies, and sustainable solutions.
  • Improves employee motivation and retention: Having a visionary purpose motivates employees to pour their heart into achieving something meaningful within their organization.
  • Gamechanger: Audacious purpose drives radical transformation to disrupt an entire industry, or transform a community or even the planet.
  • Focus and alignment: In today's rapidly evolving world, an MTP acts as a filter ensuring innovation and disruption as you stay true to your organization’s meaningful purpose.
  • Resilience in challenging times: A meaningful purpose fosters a sense of responsibility and resilience within the organization, allowing it to persevere in a competitive landscape or struggling economic conditions.
  • Customer obsession and connection: Customers stay loyal to those organizations with a clear sense of purpose that aligns with their values which results in improving customer satisfaction and brand loyalty.

SpaceX’s MTP in Action

SpaceX is a prime example of the impact of having a well-defined MTP with the massive transformative purpose of enabling humanity’s colonization of the planet Mars.

This unattainable vision has not only propelled the entire organization to reach the forefront of the aerospace industry but has also revolutionized the way space exploration takes place.

SpaceX’s dedicated and relentless pursuit of their MTP has led to disruptive innovations, such as rocket technology which improves the overall experience of space travel with improved efficiency, and affordability.

Crafting your MTP: From ordinary to extraordinary

Make it Aspirational: Craft your MTP in a way that it seems to be unattainable. It should be aspiration, bold, concise, and grand.

Drive Positive Impact: Your MTP should consider everyone wins. It should be valuable not only to the organization but to the entire world.

Make it Inspirational: If it is to be shared with a stranger, your MTP should inspire action and ignite passion.

Make it Concise: Keep it short to be easily understandable by others. It doesn’t need any explanation.

Descriptive of the World: Your MTP should be descriptive of the world, so you can envision the world once your MTP is achieved.

Actionable strategies for implementation of MTP for 10x growth and impact

1) Communicate purpose: Communicate your MTP to all the stakeholders, employees, and leaders within the organization on a regular basis to keep everyone inspired and motivated to work to achieve a shared goal.

2) Define a clear purpose: Make a strategic alignment of specific, measurable, relevant, and time-bound purpose-driven goals with the organization’s values.

3) Purpose-driven strategic alignment: The purpose of an organization should be integrated into every aspect of the organization's business, operations, and strategy.

4) Empower employees: Engage employees by listening to them, value their opinions, and involve them in the process where required to execute the purpose.

5) Track data-driven progress: Develop performance-based metrics to measure and track the progress of your MTP. Tools like MTP Dashboard can help to track the progress of your concrete outcomes. Real-time data informs the stakeholders regarding the potential improvements and adjustments.

Conclusion

MTP is not a mission statement nor a magic bullet, but it is a powerful tool that can assist organizations to scale 10x growth and impact.

By embracing MTP, organizations can inspire their teams, connect with customers on a deeper level, and enable communities to work towards a better future. It may take a lifetime, but the impact it creates is infinite, stimulating radical change and innovation in the organization with a lasting global impact.

A well-crafted MTP requires critical thinking considering what can be possible in the future which is not possible today along with the work and aspiration to create a better future while enabling the people of the organization to passionately work towards a meaningful purpose.
