How my faith inspired my leadership journey
Growing up in an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahodo church, I was immersed in a community that valued compassion, service, and humility. These principles have deeply influenced my personal and professional life, shaping my journey as a medical doctor and public health specialist. From an early age, I was inspired by stories of selfless service and unwavering faith in the face of adversity. I believe that true leadership is about serving others with love and integrity, rather than wielding power. This belief has guided me through national and international public health projects, always striving to embody the principles of my faith.
The communal way of life in my church, which builds on societal righteousness and well-being, inspired me to focus on health interventions addressing public health challenges on a larger scale as my passion. This approach has allowed me to achieve meaningful outcomes, particularly in improving the health and well-being of women, girls, youth, and children. I have always aimed to protect and uplift those around me, especially the vulnerable and marginalized, drawing on the profound lesson of stewardship from my faith. I firmly believe in the value of empathy and compassion in addressing health inequalities among disadvantaged communities, recognizing the importance of giving back considering my relative privilege.
The core of my faith serves as a guiding light, illuminating the path of my personal growth and prompting me to constantly reassess and improve myself. Within the framework of my faith, I recognize the significance of acknowledging my limitations such as emotional intelligence and conflict-resolving skills, and seeking divine guidance in all my endeavors. Although it can be challenging, I am dedicated to relying on the grace of God to overcome my unbelief. My faith continually underscores the importance of humility and emphasizes the necessity of embracing God's grace, even in the face of worldly success.
My faith has also taught me the power of hope and resilience. When facing challenges in my work, I draw strength from my spiritual beliefs, knowing that perseverance and faith can overcome even the most daunting obstacles. Attending holy liturgy and participating in the traditions and mysteries of the church revitalizes my energy and well-being, particularly important in the demanding field of public health. In conclusion, Orthodox Christianity has been a profound source of inspiration and guidance in my leadership journey. It has shaped my values, informed my actions, and fueled my passion for making a positive difference in the world. As I continue to serve in the field of public health, I remain committed to leading with compassion, integrity, and unwavering faith.
This article was inspired by our assignment at the Trinity Fellowship Program, the 2- years long faith-inspired leadership program I am participating as a fellow. But, it really helped me reflect deeply on my faith and how it has shaped my decisions as a leader. How does your faith inspire your leadership journey? I would love to hear about it.
