How My Phone Ate My Business Card: A Businessman’s Experience with Managing Connections
Have you ever wondered about the life of a typical businessman and how he manages his daily routine? Is everything as easy as a click of the mouse? Here is a story of Mike and his everyday hassle from dawn till dusk, and how a simple change with his business card transformed his experience.
Mike Smith, a 28-year-old who lives on the 11th floor of an apartment in Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, owns a consulting company called Smith Consulting Solutions. This company, Mike’s brainchild, quickly gained a reputation for providing strategic business advice to a diverse clientele, ranging from innovative startups to well-established corporations. Despite his professional success, Mike’s life was a whirlwind of meetings, deadlines, and an ever-growing stack of business cards that symbolized both his vast network and his chaotic organizational system.
Every morning, Mike wakes up at 6, and before even going to the bathroom, he checks all his notifications on his smartphone. His Google Assistant informs him of the day's plans, with most of the important reminders being meeting schedules. The most hectic task for him is remembering people's names and keeping their contacts saved.
On Monday morning, after having breakfast, Mike grabs the keys to his sedan and leaves for work. He needs to get his car a paint job but can't remember where he kept the business card of the car detailing studio. He is always in a rush because he has more than one business to run, often sacrificing his personal time.
Upon reaching his office, he finds his employees on time and has a meeting with a real estate business owner, Mr. Arjun. The deal is good, and Mr. Arjun tells him about his different ventures. Mike mentions that he also has more than one business; the others are startups he invested in for some college kids. Mike is also not able to keep updates about those startups as he doesn’t have any digital touch with them. He hands his consulting business card to Mr. Arjun, but Mr. Arjun has to wait for a few minutes while Mike fumbles through a stack of cards, which is obviously embarrassing. Mike decides that something must be done about this. Additionally, he is unable to keep track of all his employees because some have changed their email addresses and phone numbers.

The Revelation
After office hours, Mike's work isn't done yet. He needs to keep planning for the next day and set reminders and alarms. To end his day, he goes to a swimming club with his friend Rahul. Rahul is a business associate of a well-known MNC, and Mike and Rahul are childhood friends. Mike tells Rahul about his stressful week, and Rahul starts laughing. Mike asks him, "What's so funny, Rahul?" Rahul replies, "Mike, you use your phone all the time; why didn't you come across a digital business card?" He explains the benefits of digital business cards and how they will save Mike time, eliminating the need to remember everyone's name. That night, Rahul is like an angel to Mike, showing his magic with his digital business card. It takes Mike a few minutes to download and create a digital business card for himself. That night Mike spends about 2 hours studying the various features of digital business cards and discovers many points that Rahul didn’t even mention.
Mike is impressed with the features, like contact sharing with just a tap. Even if he misses exchanging it physically, he can still share it remotely. He also adds a profile picture of himself and customizes it with all the necessary details. The next workday, everything changes. He leaves all his physical cards at home and goes to the office. Mr. Arjun comes again, and Mike exchanges his digital business card with him. Mr. Arjun is fascinated with the seamless sharing, so Mike asks his IT manager to integrate it with the CRM software. Now he doesn't have to remember the names of important people; they are saved in the contact sections with their job titles and designations. The employees' reaction is also very cheerful with the new digital business card use in the company. All the networking tasks, which used to take about 10 hours a day, now get sorted in under 6 hours. After the office, Mike goes to the car detailing studio and is able to exchange his digital business card from another account as well.
Later that day, Mike goes swimming early, as all his tasks for the day are completed. Rahul asks him about his experience, and Mike gives him a good gesture. Later, Mike returns home to end the day and once again sets all his reminders, but this time he is very relaxed as the task of noting down names and numbers has been eradicated. He sees the pack of cards on the table that he intentionally left there the same day, throws them in the dustbin, and realizes how his smartphone ate his business card for good.
