How the mystery surrounding 'Who is Satoshi?' protects us from cognitive biases and logical fallacies

A logical fallacy is a flaw in reasoning, a trick or illusion of thought.

Cognitive biases make our judgements or decisions irrational.

1. Ad Hominem - "attacking your opponent’s character or personal traits in an attempt to undermine their argument."

Difficult to attack Satoshi's character or personal traits when we don't know who he/she is .. 🙂

2. Appeal to Authority – "Saying that because an authority thinks something, it must therefore be true."

Sure, we have historical writings from Satoshi but we can't exactly ask for current thoughts.. Therefore current ideas in Bitcoin have to be judged more so on merit.

3. Genetic fallacy - "You judged something as either good or bad on the basis of where it comes from, or from whom it came."

Where did Satoshi come from? Is it 1 person or a group? man or woman? ethnicity? age? location? Hard to suffer from this fallacy given all the unknowns!

4. Reactance - "You'd rather do the opposite of what someone is trying to make you do."

There's no ongoing charismatic CEO sales pitch to resist in Bitcoin, it just is. Satoshi famously writes "If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry"

5. The Bystander effect - "You presume someone else is going to do something in an emergency situation."

Challenging to suffer from this bias in a Satoshi Bitcoin world where you won't have your hand held and responsibility/accountability is paramount.

6. Halo Effect - "How much you like someone, or how attractive they are, influences your other judgments of them."

Appearance side of this definitely relevant as it's often discussed how height and attractiveness can aid with perceived credibility. Is Satoshi attractive ? 🤷‍♂️

Jesse Berger would love your thoughts on this, as I can't remember the exact wording you used but my idea for this post came about after reading your chapter on Bitcoin's 'immaculate inception' or beginnings (or similar!)

Cryptocurrency mining uses more electricity than Belgium, Argentina or the Philippines? Its an ecological catastrophe and a kind of memetic parasite on our civilisation and planet, draining natural resources to fuel its own growth.
