How to Navigate Your Career Post Layoff and in Uncertain Times

How to Navigate Your Career Post Layoff and in Uncertain Times

“Today’s your last day working at the company”

What would you do if you encountered this message upon opening your email? How would you feel?

For years as a Career Coach, I met and worked with individuals who have been affected by the “necessary” business decision called layoffs.

These layoffs are because of organizational changes and downsizing which are all linked to these three reasons: overforecast, overhiring, and overspending.

A layoff may provide some people with much-needed relief from a challenging work environment or open the door to new opportunities. However, for some people, losing a job can have a significant emotional impact.

Hence, I conducted the How to Navigate Your Career Post Layoff and in Uncertain Times free training on LinkedIn today, November 17, 2022 at 10:00 AM EST.

In the LIVE Training, I shared about the 5 stages of grief, my layoff story, my RECOVER formula in coping with a layoff, strategies on how to manage job search stress, and techniques in evaluating the right fit for your next opportunity.

The 5 Stages of Job Loss Grief

1. Denial

This is the stage where you cannot believe that such an incident happened to you. You may think “This can’t be happening to me” and still are hoping that everything will still continue as usual.

2. Anger

Stage Two is when reality sinks in and the feeling of anger rises within you. Commonly, people who are at this stage start pointing out their frustration towards the manager, the colleagues, or even the business itself.

3. Bargaining

The Bargaining Stage is when you try to negotiate and think of reaching a compromise. When you are at this stage, you end up thinking so much about the things you could have done more and how things could have changed for the better. However, in reality, layoffs are external circumstances that you don’t have control over.

4. Depression

Stage Four is when one has lost all the hope. When reality sinks in, you might experience despair, grief, and intense sadness. You might also start to isolate yourself from friends, family, and even once-fun activities.

5. Acceptance

When you acknowledge the reality of the issue and the necessity to act, you have arrived at Stage Five and achieved acceptance. Although you may not be pleased with the circumstances, you are aware that they are what they are, and it is now time to look back, reevaluate, and plan your next steps

How to Cope with a Layoff: RECOVER Formula

While I can’t take the feeling of the overwhelming stress away, I want to do what I can as a Career Coach — to help you discover ways to move forward, carving a new and exciting path for yourself after a layoff. Here’s my RECOVER Formula:

  1. Reframe the situation and recognize it’s not your fault.
  2. Evaluate your finances and eliminate unnecessary expenses.
  3. Connect with people and communicate what you need and want.
  4. Overcome your fears and have an open mind.
  5. Vent your feelings and value yourself.
  6. Embrace change and explore new possibilities
  7. Reflect on what’s next and reinvent yourself.

How to Manage Job Search Stress

It’s quite normal to feel stressed and frustrated about a job search, especially when you have been searching for a long period of time. Here are some strategies that you can apply to manage your job search stress:

  1. Self awareness. Know your triggers.
  2. Self-care activities. Fill your cup, exercise, and meditate.
  3. Surroundings. Secure a feel-good environment, tidy and light up your space.
  4. Set a schedule. Have a new routine, take breaks, and set boundaries.
  5. Self-talk. Improve your self-talk, practice affirmations, and create a vision board.
  6. Savor your wins. Celebrate progress and small victories like updating your profile, connecting with new people, and other small steps.
  7. Slow down. Take time off, sleep in, and quiet your mind.
  8. Social media detox. Go off the grid, go offline, and turn off notifications.
  9. Seize the day. Do something fun and something that will make you feel good.
  10. Seek support. Find an accountability partner to do job search with you.

Tough times don’t last; tough people do.
