How Our Authentic Stories Can Bring About Greater Good

After a lifetime of trying to minimize my difference—the difference between me and my white mother, the difference between me and my coworkers, the difference between me and other thought leaders—I am now being pulled out of the shadows and into the spotlight to share my story.

These past few years, I’ve felt compelled to share my journey of overcoming adversity, being an outsider in the workplace, existing as an outcast in a biracial household. My Jewish grandmother was dissatisfied with whom my mother had chosen to start a family with (i.e., someone Black and Christian), which complicated our relationship since I was a symbolic embodiment of that sin, so to speak.

As an adult, I now see the professional skills this experience of exclusion instilled in me, and I feel how this story resonates with the audiences I share it with.

It’s a strange and uncomfortable process, simply because I’ve been conditioned to find safety in hiding my story. But when the call to action is so loud and so resolute, it’s important to follow that call for the greater good.

As I’ve discovered my leadership style over the course of my career, I’ve learned that a caring leader is someone who is comfortable being vulnerable with those they lead, thus fulfilling a higher—albeit more difficult—purpose.

In this week's blog post I share my story. I used to be afraid to tell it, but now I see the greater good that story telling can bring about.

What's your story?

Heather, Things are hard enough with support of your family. Your experiences have obviously increased your sensitivity toward others. Great people often are made by rising out of adversity.

As a retinal surgeon, I not only created ZyDoc but use it in my own practice. ZyDoc allows you to simply and efficiently dictate your encounters enabling you to get home on time, earn 5 star reviews and get more referrals. I have received a Congressional Recognition Award in addition to other awards such as JDRF Humanitarian of the Year, Gift of Sight, and Anton Banko.   Physicians - in light of the encouraging news about COVID therapeutics and vaccines, ZyDoc wants to help you deal with the anticipated post-COVID volume of backlogged patients.  As a doctor and practice owner I understand your financial challenges. ZyDoc is offering COVID-battered small practices a special rate on our medical transcription services with automated EHR insertion option. You won't have to use speech recognition or scribes, just standard dictation. We are offering a 30% reduced rate for new clients in December if you automatically enroll at www.zydoc.com. We have a contract with BAA to protect you along with Lloyds of London cyber insurance. There is a $50/month minimum per doctor that equals about 24, 1 page encounters at 7 cents a line or $2.10 a page. ZyDoc was ranked #2 in the industry for clinical documentation by Black Book Research in 2020.
