How to prepare for an interview

How to prepare for an interview

We've been back in the next level HO now for a couple of weeks and from conversations we are having with our candidates, January is busy, busy, busy, with lots of you looking for a new job and interviewing!

We thought therefore it might be helpful to share our top tips on how to prepare for an interview. We understand that getting ready for an interview can be stressful and it's important to make sure you're prepared and ready to show off your skills, so hopefully the below will help you do just that :)

1. First things first: check your CV.

You never know what questions they're going to ask about it, especially if you're looking to change careers or have had a break in work.

Be prepared for a CV breakdown. Check the dates and your experience and be ready to explain any gaps, experience, relevant software experience and reasons for leaving.

2. Prepare some questions for them

You'll look more engaged and interested if you have some questions ready. As recruiters, employers tell us that they like candidates to ask questions. Recently, Blu Digital ran a LinkedIn poll asking employers what their biggest red flags were in interviews, 56% voted it is when candidates do not ask questions. Asking questions shows the interviewer you are interested in the job role and checking it is right for you.

This can be difficult so have a bank of questions ready just in case they answer one during the interview—things like

"Who will I report to?"

“what are the company goals for the next quarter?”

“do you offer training opportunities?”

"How will my success be measured?" or

"What software do you use?" may help guide the conversation toward topics that interest you or show off your knowledge about the company or team. We prepare our candidates for their interviews, so always here to help.

3. Research the role and the company

This will help you focus on exactly what they're looking for and give you a better idea of how you fit into their company culture. As recruiters, we know our clients and their company, so we brief and prepare our candidates for the company ensuring they are interview ready.

4. Check the journey!

How long is the drive? what are the local transport options and any other relevant information like parking—you don't want to turn up late because you couldn't find a parking spot or missed the bus.

5. Let your passion shine through

Talk about why this job is perfect for you, how it meets your goals, how the business matches your values, and how your skills fit the job specifications—they want someone who's excited about working there.

6. Finally: get there early!

You don't want to be late, so arriving at least 15 minutes before your interview time is always a good idea. Finding a nearby coffee shop where you can review your notes and calm any nerves.

We really hope these tips help and wish anyone interviewing at the moment the best of luck. Remember that we are at the other end of the phone or email, if you need any free advice or guidance. 01789 700021 / hello@nextlevelrecruitment.co.uk
