So you’ve landed an interview for that dream job, now what? The interview process can be nerve-wracking, but it’s essential to remember that it’s not just about what you know, it’s about how you present yourself, demonstrate your skills, and connect with the hiring manager and the team. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out in your career, feeling confident while interviewing can make all the difference in landing that job offer.

Authenticity Over Memorization

A common mistake many interviewees make is trying to memorize their answers, turning the interview into a rehearsed monologue. However, this can make you come across as robotic and disconnected. Instead, focus on preparing examples as bullet points and choose experiences you can speak to with confidence. Responding with authenticity and confidence will make a much stronger impression than reciting memorized answers.

Emphasizing How Over What

Interviewers not only seek candidates with the right qualifications, but also those who can demonstrate confidence, connect with others, and align with the company culture. It’s crucial to remember that if you’re being interviewed, you already meet the basic qualifications for the job. Therefore, rather than overthinking technical aspects, focus on showcasing how you can uniquely contribute to the role and the organization and WHY it's important to you.

The Power of Research

Thoroughly researching the company, its future prospects, and the individuals you’ll be meeting with is indispensable. Understanding the company’s goals, challenges, and values will enable you to articulate how you can provide value and contribute to its success. Additionally, being well-versed in the company's background and the role you’re applying for will demonstrate your genuine interest and preparedness. Be prepared to share why this particular company is interesting to you.

Knowing Yourself

Understanding your own professional journey, why you do what you do, your strengths, accomplishments, and areas for growth is vital. Reflect on your major contributions, how you handle setbacks, and what sets you apart from other candidates. Journaling can be a helpful exercise to gain clarity on these aspects and uniquely position yourself for the role.

Asking the Right Questions

Interviews are a two-way street, and asking insightful questions can not only provide you with valuable information but also demonstrate your genuine interest in the role and the company. Here are some examples of questions you can ask during the interview:

  • What do you love best about working here?
  • What would be my top priorities in the first 30, 60, and 90 days?
  • Why is this role available? Why did the last person leave?
  • If you could solve one problem in the team, what would it be?
  • Can you tell me about the development path of someone in the department who started at a similar level? What did that look like? Where are they now?
  • How do you see me fitting into this role?
  • Do you have any hesitations about my fit for this role?

Embracing Authenticity

Approaching the interview with authenticity is key. It’s important to remember that you are also evaluating whether the company and the role align with your career goals and values. Being true to yourself during the interview process ensures that you’re seeking a mutual fit, setting the stage for long-term success if you receive an offer.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, whether you receive the job offer or not, it’s essential to recognize that it doesn’t define your worth as a professional. Each interview is an opportunity for mutual evaluation, and finding the right fit is paramount for long-term satisfaction and success. Approach each interview as a chance to learn and grow, and remember that the right opportunity is out there waiting for you.
