How purpose drives success in healthtech

Aligned purpose

‘Every single person, every single organisation on the planet knows what they do, 100%. Some know how they do it, but very few people or organisations know why they do what they do.  By why, I mean what’s your purpose, your cause, your belief … and why should anyone care?  The inspired organisations all think, act, and communicate from the inside out.’  Simon Sinek, ‘Start with WHY’.

Sinek’s words explain a very simple and straightforward concept; one which couldn’t ring truer than in the healthtech space, where that shared sense of purpose is at the forefront of everything we do. Whatever one’s personal story or journey, health and healthcare touches all our lives, whether directly or indirectly, positively or negatively, in the past, present or the future. There’s not a single skillset in a healthtech organisation like ours which could not be deployed in a different setting; our engineers could build gaming software, our marketeers could promote global travel destinations, and our product teams could be working on roadmaps for the next Apple release. When we hire into our world, we actively hire individuals who choose us because they share our drive for transforming the interaction between healthcare teams and patients; for supporting the NHS and for empowering patients. What comes first equal to this aligned focus is the talent and skills our people bring to the table, enabling us to deliver to the very highest standard on the how and the what.  However, our journey has to start with the ‘WHY’. The most talented software engineer, project manager or UX designer in the world won’t come with us if they don’t share passionately in our purpose, above all else.

Purposeful partnerships

But this sense of aligned focus isn’t just something that impacts who and how we hire.  It pervades through everything we do at every stage in our internal and customer facing processes.  The upside of that – especially in a healthtech organisation – is that seeing the transformative impact of our technology on both the patient and the clinician experience further embeds and validates that sense of purpose.  Success in the healthtech world is defined as much by the outcome as by the output. It’s why developing innovative digital solutions, implementing them and just moving on to the next new development release simply isn’t enough.  For our solutions to make a meaningful and positive impact – and for us to deliver in ways that matter not just to us but to healthcare teams and patients – we work as a true and trusted partner to our customers.  Some of our most rewarding feedback has highlighted the value of ensuring that this partnership continues during and well beyond go-live with our customers.  It’s why they tell us they have the confidence and the sense of safety to be ambitious with what they do, with the benefit of our team alongside.  And it's also what enables us to continuously enhance and shape our products and services so that we can ensure that we are providing the right solutions in the right way at the right time. That – to coin Sinek’s phrase – is thinking, acting and communicating from the inside out.  It’s purposeful through and through, it is all about making healthcare better for everyone, and it’s why we come to work every day.
