How Reagan Hatch Built a Thriving Cannabis Business by Betting on Herself
When I think of entrepreneurship, I think of courage, boldness, and sometimes a bit of rebellion against the norm. It’s not about following trends or seeking easy wins—it's about stepping into the unknown, embracing the challenge, and pushing boundaries. This perfectly describes my guest, Reagan Hatch , co-founder of CannaSiteCo. , who took a bet on herself and dived headfirst into a highly regulated and stigmatized industry: cannabis.
Now, Reagan didn’t just dip her toes in—she went all in. Today, she's leading a company that helps cannabis businesses build high-converting websites. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
In our conversation, Reagan shared her journey into an industry that still raises eyebrows in many parts of the country. Her story isn’t just about building a business; it's about challenging perceptions, breaking down barriers, and owning her decisions in a world that’s still hesitant to fully embrace the cannabis market.
1. The Power of Owning Your Decisions
Stepping into the cannabis space meant Reagan had to deal with a lot of pushback, particularly from her conservative Texas roots. People didn’t quite get it at first. "You’re going to sell cannabis?" her friends would ask. But Reagan didn’t flinch. "No," she’d respond. "I’m going to help others sell cannabis."
She wasn’t looking for validation. She was looking for results. As Reagan put it, “I had to stop caring about what others thought. I needed to do what was right for me and my business.”
This speaks to a crucial point for anyone considering entrepreneurship—ownership. You can’t build something worthwhile if you’re constantly seeking approval. At some point, you’ve got to stop explaining yourself to people who aren’t walking your path and just start building.
2. Building a Foundation with a Website that Converts
One of the challenges Reagan faced was educating cannabis entrepreneurs about the importance of having a strong online presence. You see, it’s not enough to just throw up a website and hope for the best. A website is more than a digital brochure—it’s the foundation of your business.
“Websites are not a set-it-and-forget-it tool,” Reagan emphasized. “You have to nurture them.”
She explained that too many businesses think they can launch a beautiful site and just wait for the dollars to roll in. But that’s not how it works. You’ve got to optimize it, add content regularly, and constantly tweak things to keep up with changing algorithms and customer needs.
That’s why her company focuses on creating high-converting websites, particularly for the cannabis space, where businesses have to tread carefully due to strict regulations on advertising. Reagan and her team are WordPress pros, and they understand that if a company’s social media or email marketing channels get shut down, the website is the one thing you’ll still own. In an industry like cannabis, having that control is critical.
3. Saying No to Bad Clients
Reagan also dropped a gem during our conversation that resonated deeply with me: Sometimes, you’ve got to fire clients. As entrepreneurs, we’re often afraid to turn down money, especially in the early days. But bad clients can cost you more than they’re worth.
“The first time I fired a client was empowering." Reagan explained how the client kept trying to change terms that had been agreed upon, and when communication shifted from email to phone calls to avoid a paper trail, Reagan’s red flags went up.
“At some point, I just realized this client wasn’t worth the headache,” she admitted. And that’s a lesson every entrepreneur needs to learn. If a client is causing you to lose sleep or constantly backtracking on agreements, it’s better to let them go. Your time and peace of mind are worth more than any check.
4. Don’t Expect Others to Get Your Vision
One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation was Reagan’s advice to business owners: Don’t expect others to understand your vision, especially if you’re not willing to articulate it. Entrepreneurs often think that their vision is clear because it’s crystal clear in their own heads. But the reality is that unless you’re willing to take the time to explain your goals, no one else will fully get it.
“It’s like drawing a six on the ground,” Reagan said. “To me, it’s a six, but to you, standing on the other side, it looks like a nine.”
This analogy hit home for me. As business owners, we sometimes expect others—employees, partners, even customers—to understand what we’re trying to do without taking the time to explain it properly. If you want your website to convert, if you want your business to grow, you’ve got to be involved. You’ve got to communicate your vision.
5. Fast is the Name of the Game
Lastly, Reagan emphasized one of her company’s core values: speed. CannaSite builds websites in one day, one week, or one month. “We meet clients where they are with their budget and timeline,” she explained. This is not only about efficiency but also about keeping up with the fast pace of the cannabis industry.
“In cannabis, you can’t afford to take six to twelve months to build a website, you’ve got to be fast, or you’ll miss out on opportunities.”
And that’s another key point for any entrepreneur: Don’t let perfection slow you down. In today’s fast-moving markets, you’ve got to be able to execute quickly, learn from your mistakes, and keep moving forward.
Conclusion
Reagan Hatch is a testament to what happens when you take a leap of faith, ignore the naysayers, and bet on yourself. She didn’t wait for the perfect moment or seek approval from everyone around her. She saw a need, built a solution, and has been thriving ever since.
