In 2022, the Romanian economy is expected to grow with some 4.8% after a growth of 7% in 2021. According to the Finance Minister, the European Union recovery funds released under the PNRR will help Romania boost its investment spending to 6.7% of the GDP in 2022.

The Romanian Ministry of Finance 2022-2024 budget strategy estimates investment could reach 7.7% of GDP by 2024 and help the EU state's economy grow 5% per year on average.

According to an analysis by Deloitte Romania, the M&A market in Romania reached an all-time record in 2021 in terms of number of deals, having recorded 137 transactions.

According to official provisional and revised data from National Bank of Romania, the foreign direct investment (FDI) in Romania more than tripled y-t-y in the first 10 months of 2021, from 2.13 bnEUR to 6.88 bnEUR.

According to players in the financial sector, in 2021 agriculture, IT, real estate and production / manufacturing were the main sectors that attracted bank financing.

The leading European renewable energy developer Green Genius plans to build over 500 MW Solar PV capacity in Romania by 2025 to generate green and clean energy in the country. In line with the National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate Change 2021–2030, Romania has to comply with the target that, by 2030, 30.7% of its total energy mix to be generated from renewable energy sources.

The auto manufacturing sector is now one of the strongest in Romania. Together with the areas that support it, such as IT & software development, it attracts high levels of FDI in the Romanian post-covid economy.

PROMELEK XXI, one of the main players on the Romanian electrical equipment market, part of the Grupo Elektra (Spain) which acquired the firm ten years ago, added in 2021 approx. 200 new electric charging stations, both in public and private locations, designed for 100% electric or hybrid plug-in cars. 

The demand for electrical solutions has been growing for over 20 years. Promelek XXI relies, this year, on a 15% advance of the business to about 27.5 mEUR. In the last 8 years the company has invested over 1.9 million euros in development, as well as in the acquisition of stakes in other adjacent companies.

CEC Bank finances, through a pre-financing loan of 175.3 million lei, for 11 years, the construction of the ClusterPower data center in Dolj County, a greenfield investment with a total value of 208 million lei. 

According to players in the sector, investments in industrial real estate and logistics property reach 700 mEUR in 2022. One million square meters of projects will be inaugurated and started. The growing demand for storage spaces, but also for new production units determines the big developers to build new logistics centers, but also to buy land or to purchase existing warehouses.

According to Cegedim, the Romanian medicines market went up 17% to EUR 4.24 bln in 2021. The largest companies by value in 2021 were SanofiNovartis and Zentiva. In volume, two companies with local factories are in the first two positions - Zentiva and Sun Pharma (Terapia Cluj).

The Romanian IT sector attracts foreign investors and buyers. For example, Publicis Groupe, one of Europe’s largest players in the communications market, has recently bought the Romanian software company Tremend Software Consulting, one of the most dynamic independent consulting and software development companies in Central and Eastern Europe. Tremend registered a turnover of 100.6 million lei in 2020 and a net profit of 12.4 million lei, according to official sources.

The Romanian GDP advanced 7.4% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2021, faster than a preliminary figure of 7.2%. Household consumption in Romania expanded 9.3% while imports increased at a faster rate of 9.4%. Looking at the second quarter of 2021, Romanian GDP grew by 13.9% year-on-year, household consumption expanded faster (11.8% vs. 0.8%) and imports increased at a faster rate of 42.2%.
