How to Spot FAKE N95 Respirators
2 weeks ago I knew nothing about masks. Yesterday I was asked by a US midwestern hospital if the N95 masks they were about to buy were real. A quick doc review and FDA part lookup gave the answer - they were FAKE. As was their previous order. The implications are sobering.
Sourcing genuine respirators at a fair market price with reasonable delivery times has become very difficult (many healthcare providers are turning to the FDA allowed KN95 and FFP2). Demand and prices for raw materials and shipping is increasing almost daily. Air freight rates China to New York are 6x prices a few months ago, if you can get on board.
Here are a few resources and what we look at when evaluating N95/KN95/FFP2 respirators:
- CDC: Counterfeit Respirators / Misrepresentation of NIOSH-Approval
- CDC: NIOSH-Approved N95 Particulate Filtering Facepiece Respirators
- FDA: Establishment Registration & Device Listing
- CE (Europe): Certificate Verification
- China: National Medical Products Administration database
