How to start a watch collection with £500
One of my favourite articles from this week was a column by WatchPro's UK editor Tracey Llewllyn about amazing collectible mechanical watches that can be bought for under £500 from the likes of Citizen, Tissot and Bulova.
These brands, recognising that the accuracy of quartz is being displaced from above by the intrigue and history of mechanicals and squeezed by the rise of smartwatches from the likes of trillion-dollar-turnover Apple, are hitting a great price point with well-made automatics.
Important news from WatchPro's American edition is that voting for the WatchPro Awards has only one week to go, and a deadline of August 25.
The gala dinner takes place on September 14 at Cipriani in New York City.
The watch industry is showing its philanthropic side this year with not one, but two charity auctions.
The first is a mainly British affair with nine watch companies creating unique timepieces for a charity auction raising money for Maggie’s Centres, a cancer support and care provider with 24 facilities throughout the UK.
The EveryWatch auction, held online by Lyon & Turnbull, ends on August 23 and already has bids totalling over £30,000 that will go to the cancer charity.
Later this year we have the bi-annual Only Watch auction. Since 2005, watchmakers have been steered towards using certain colours in the unique pieces they create for the charity sale, but this year they have been told to go back through the archives of the past nine auctions and choose colours from any or all previous years.
In addition, green has been selected as a new hue, an emblem of hope, according to the organiser. The result is the most vividly coloured line-up of 62 lots in the 2023 Only Watch auction, which will be run by Christie’s on November 5 in Geneva.

Hot news from the United States is that the Rolex Emoji watch, which almost melted Instagram when it launched earlier this year, has been seen in the wild.
Well, not quite the wild, but on the wrists of arguably the country's two most famous watch collectors, musician John Mayer and American football legend Tom Brady.
Speaking of Rolex, with the women's World Cup final taking place on Sunday, we could not be more excited about the prospects for England's Lionesses as they take on Spain.
The England football team has clearly been enjoying its elevated status since winning the Euros in 2022, and splashing out on Rolex watches to treat themselves.
