How to succeed in your new Leadership Role

Are you stepping into a new management role, and it feels both exciting and a bit challenging?

Leadership is fun and such a privilege, but it also comes with so many new expectations. And it is normal to feel a little overwhelmed at times.

But don't worry, I've got you!

In this week's YouTube video, I share 10 practical tips for first-time managers or managers in a new role with a new team. These tips will help you to feel confident in the first 3 months and set yourself up for success.

Here are the top 5; make sure you check out the video for the full list.

1. Embrace the Transition

As you move from an individual contributor to a manager, expect a shift in your tasks and responsibilities. It might feel challenging for your own identity when you are suddenly not the one executing the tasks anymore. You'll spend more time managing people and their needs and goals, communicating, problem-solving, team strategy, and even handling KPI reporting and budget management. Embrace the learning journey.

2. Know Your Strengths

Understand your strengths and leverage them to build your confidence and belief in your abilities to figure it out. Recognize how your strengths can help you excel in areas like clear communication, performance management, strategic thinking, and relationship building.

3. Build a Strong Relationship with Your Manager

Initiate regular one-on-one meetings with your manager right from the start to align expectations, understand the team's history, and discuss short and long-term goals. Also, clarify your needs for support and resources.

4. Get to Know Your Team

The main focus of your first weeks should be on your team. Invest time in one-on-one meetings with team members to build trust. Listen actively and understand their strengths, aspirations, and needs. Your role is to support them in becoming their best selves.

5. Build Relationships with Stakeholders

Identify and connect with internal and external stakeholders. Invest in these relationships to build trust and ensure alignment with organizational goals.

Remember, leadership is about empowering your team to succeed. Embrace the challenges, stay open to learning, and continue to grow as a leader.

Your leadership journey is just beginning, and with these tips, you're well on your way to becoming an effective and confident leader.
