#255: How to Take the Guesswork out of Training

Introduction

In today's "People Skills" newsletter, we're once again going "off-piste" and showcasing one of our Worksheet collections in its entirety.

This collection is on "Training Skills" and we have selected the first 12 worksheets in the series.

They cover every aspect of the training process, from identifying the knowledge, skill, and attitude requirements in any training course to deciding what your best intervention is in helping people learn.

The purpose of these worksheets is for you, (and your team if you are using the worksheets on a course), to think about the skills of the trainer and clarify your own views.

So, use these 12 worksheets to take the guesswork out of training and deliver one of the key tasks in people skills...

Worksheet 01: What is Training?

Instructions: Complete the six boxes below. They will give you a full 360-degree insight into the meaning of training.

Worksheet 02: People As Resource

Instructions: We measure the resource of people by what they know (knowledge), what they can do (skills), and the motivation and energy they show for their work (attitude). Use the chart below to assess the levels of knowledge, skill and attitude in the organisation as a whole, a team in the organisation and an individual in the team.

Worksheet 03: Training and Change

Instructions: Training is a practical process aimed at equipping individuals and teams to meet the changing needs of the business. In the chart below, jot down what kind of knowledge, skill and attitude requirements were needed in the recent past, what are needed today and what will be needed in the near future.

Worksheet 04: Developing Potential

Instructions: Every group and individual has a potential for development. This is based on identifying the inherent strengths in any situation involving people. In the chart below, suggest the potential of your organisation, a team in the organisation and an individual in the team. Then suggest how training can help realise this potential.

Worksheet 05: Managing Training

Instructions: Think of an occasion when, consciously or unconsciously, you managed each step in the training cycle. Using the format of the management cycle, describe the key steps.

Worksheet 06: Induction

Instructions: Outline your normal workplace induction programme in the chart below for two different jobs, one at a junior organisational level, the other at a senior organisational level.

Worksheet 07: Mentor, Coach, Facilitator

Instructions: Imagine that one of your team has to give her first presentation in front of important customers in a week's time. Suggest how you, as manager or trainer, might use the time to act as mentor, coach and facilitator to help her prepare.

Worksheet 08: Set Pieces and Run-of-Play

Instructions: Set pieces are the one-off, high profile features of training. They include seminars, courses and conferences. Run-of-play are the ongoing, low-profile features, such as on-the-job training, mentoring and instruction. In the chart below, give examples of each type of training in your own organisation over the past year.

Worksheet 09: Multiple Intelligences

Instructions: Imagine that you have been asked to organise and deliver a workshop on leadership skills. Suggest in the space below how you could use the seven different intelligences to help people learn.

Worksheet 10: Instruction

Instructions: Imagine that you have purchased the latest make of video recorder for your office. Having acquainted yourself with how it works, you now need to train two of your team. Using the 10-step instruction model below, outline what you would do and say.

Worksheet 11: Sub-Skills and Manageable Bits

Instructions: After a series of customer complaints, you decide to hold a series of short weekly training sessions on aspects of customer care. In column A below, break down the skills of customer care into up to twelve manageable bits and self-contained sub-skills. Then do the same for any other skill which you need people to learn.

Worksheet 12: Planning a Course

Instructions: Imagine that you have been asked to run a training session on management styles as part of a cultural change programme in your organisation. Outline in the space below how you would plan to meet the needs of the trainees on the course.
