If you're currently an undergraduate, the smart move is to seek out an internship that will help you smash through the barriers to entry and make you a more competitive candidate for graduate job roles. 

 To really shine in the workplace, you need to show off your communication, teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving, leadership, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking skills. These are all crucial abilities that allow you to work effectively with colleagues and clients alike, and by honing them, you'll give yourself a leg up in today's fast-paced job market. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and show the world what you're made of! 

 

 Networking 🌐 

Many jobs require the use of a professional network, therefore networking is a skill which employers value. After meeting someone at a networking event or exchanging contact information, make sure to follow up with them within a few days to express your appreciation for their time and continue the conversation. You can also connect with them on LinkedIn or other professional networks to stay in touch and build a relationship over time. Remember to be genuine and add value to the relationship, rather than just trying to promote yourself

There are so many people with the same academic background and skills, so you need to stand out from the crowd. Having a particular interest or hobby will give you an edge. Pick a genuine hobby that will give the employer an idea of how your personality and skills will advantage the business. 

 

A Good CV 📄 

Your CV is the tool which allows you to market yourself to an employer. It showcases your skills, experience and demonstrates to employers whether you are the right fit for the job. 

Make sure you make your resume easy to read and use words and phrases that align with the job description. Swap out elementary words for action verbs such as 'delegated', 'conducted' or 'enabled'. Word choice is critical in describing what you have achieved! 

 

Degree 🎓 

Statistics from the Department of Education revealed that unemployment rates among graduates are much lower than non-graduates. The numbers showed 87% of university graduates in employment vs 71% in employment without a degree. So, if there’s a specific industry that you would like to enter , getting the relevant degree would be beneficial in boosting your employability. 

 

Have good chat 💬 

Good communication and relationship building is key to working well with employers! The impression that you make when speaking face-to-face with an interviewer determines whether you get the role or get rejected. Body language is a significant part of communication so smile, nod and make eye contact. Think before you speak, be clear and concise and think about the perspective of your audience!
