How Will You #BreakTheBias?

How Will You #BreakTheBias?

At a very young age I was taught that if I had a seat at the table, any table, my voice mattered. Growing up, my father encouraged my older brother and I to read the front page of the newspaper before dinner so we could discuss and debate current events. He would tell us that we were expected to form our own opinion, not that of our friends or teachers, and to defend it required us to research and be informed.

When he brought business associates to our home, our dinnertime “panel discussion” expanded to include our guests. As the company became more diverse, the expectations remained the same. Many years later I realized what an incredible gift my father gave to me. He told me in his actions that my age, my gender, and even my experience did not limit my ability to have an opinion. That became a leadership lesson for me. If you have a seat at the table, speak up. Use it to make a difference for yourself and for others.

According to recent research, almost 60% of women regularly experience microaggressions at work. And women of color, LGBTQ+ women, and women with disabilities face more acute biases. This is among the reasons why #BreakTheBias is the theme International Women’s Day this year.

Breaking gender bias is important for every organization to unlock the full potential of every member of the team and to enable people to bring their full, authentic self to work.

How can we help break gender bias in the workplace? By advocating for those who aren't in the room. When in a meeting, it’s making sure all voices are heard and that you’re tapping into diverse ideas. If you witness bias occurring, either conscious or unconscious, it’s speaking up in the moment.

The International Women’s Day’s website offers materials and resources to help break the gender bias in the workplace. At GPN, we celebrate individuality knowing that together, we are more. I am passionate about creating an inclusive culture because I recognize that what makes us different, makes us stronger.

Now I’d like to ask my colleagues and friends how will you help #BreakTheBias?

My dad's handwriting tattooed on my wrist to help me remember that very point. He taught Jenise Huffman and me well.
