Everyone’s opinion of success takes on different forms. Do you think success means making a certain amount of money, having a high level of prestige, gaining acceptance from your peers, or buying a new home?

There’s nothing wrong with these things in and of themselves, but there can be more to the meaning of success. I have found that the way you define success will ultimately define you. If you focus your time and energy on fleeting things, your heart won’t be satisfied for long. But if you center your attention and effort on things that last, your heart will stay filled.

As a young entrepreneur, I learned this the hard way. I bent my heart toward getting my name in the newspaper, making a lot of money, gaining the approval of others, buying a better car, and getting accolades. Unknowingly, I had defined success in these ways, and it then defined who I was. I slowly began prioritizing things over people, and it wasn’t working in my favor on the inside. Sure, there was financial growth… but at what personal expense? I was tired, I was straining, and I was in desperate need of a new perspective!

This inner struggle to define success led me to a deeper understanding of the concept. The purpose of my business was to help people, not to acquire popularity.

What kind of impact could I have by giving my heart to people and my mind to business?

Suddenly, it hit me. My business had never really been about me. It was about the profound impact I could make through my work. In that moment of truth I felt an immense sense of liberation. My life purpose to be of service to others became clearer.

As a result of this realization, I now define success as the number of lives I can positively impact - not the number of things I can buy. When you live to serve others, tremendous blessings come your way.

Now knowing that success can define you, it’s time to get the upper hand and redefine your success.
