HQ&A: Making Career Moves with Monique C.
From mid-career changes to leveling up in your current company, making moves at work can feel intimidating. Monique C., Shipt’s Director of Recruiting, offers her expert advice on how to make the most of your occupation. Read on if you’re a new grad entering the workforce, making your way through the great resignation, or simply love all things career development and recruiting.
1. First things first, let’s talk about your role. What do you do at Shipt?
I have the honor of leading an incredible team of Recruiters and Recruiting Coordinators that partner to find great talent for Shipt. My team recruits for all departments across Shipt HQ, in addition to Campus Recruiting and our Diversity Hiring Initiatives team. I love leading this fun and creative team.
2. What qualities does an ideal candidate have?
The qualities that tend to set candidates apart are learning agility and ability to navigate ambiguity. Additionally, since Shipt is a people centric and values based organization, it’s great to find candidates that embrace the Shipt values of Caring, Drive, Rally, Authenticity, and Positivity.
3. The great resignation has many people changing jobs. What tips can you give people looking to make mid-career changes?
The pandemic has given people time to reflect on their values and priorities and evaluate what brings meaning to their lives. Many individuals may decide to leave their jobs to be stay at home parents or switch careers.
To make a mid-career change it’s incredibly beneficial to gain first hand exposure to your desired field. Networking is a great first step, since it provides exposure to the realities of the new career and helps develop relationships that will be pivotal during the job search. It’s important to evaluate the minimum qualifications in the role and gain first hand experience through stretch assignments and/or gaining the education needed. One of the many benefits we offer at Shipt is debt-free education through Guild, which is a tremendous asset for career development.

4. What’s your go-to advice for career development?
Look at career development as a way to gain new skill sets and exposure. Development and growth does not always have to be through a promotion. There are opportunities to gain new skill sets that will help in the future, but people get so focused on “moving up” that they lose sight of the valuable experiences that can be gained in a lateral move.
Additionally, one of the keys for career development if you’d like to move up in your organization is to do your current job well. Excelling in your current position is key when seeking career advancement in your current company.
5. You’ve helped lead the success of our Pivot Tech partnership, a program that helps team members grow their tech skills and move into new positions, all while on-the-job. What has been your favorite part of your experience with the partnership?
My favorite part of leading the Pivot partnership was watching hopeful engineers and data analysts take the courageous step to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams. It takes a lot of courage to change your career and to take a 20-week immersive and challenging bootcamp, but they did it and I am incredibly proud to be a part of their journey.
6. Finally: what’s always on your Shipt orders?
I love Yogi Sweet Tangerine Positive Energy Tea, so I always have at least 2 -3 boxes included in each Shipt order. It’s the perfect way to start my day and I love the motivational quotes they put in each tea packet.
