The HR Leadership Project: Empowering HR Leaders in the UK
This one is for all the HR leaders out there - If that's not you please share within your organisation and or with your connections.
Introduction to the HR Leadership Project
As training and development facilitators/coaches, we witness firsthand the evolving challenges faced by HR leaders across the UK. As a result we have begun The HR Leadership Project - a project very close to my heart born from a deep-seated belief that those who tirelessly support others deserve support themselves.
This idea for supporting HR happened during a conversation with Neil and when I suggested "Shall we do something about that then?” Without hesitation Neil said, “that’s what I like about you, not only do you get it, you want to take action too!”
A couple of chats later we’ve a mission and plan. I’m sure it will evolve as we collaborate with fellow HR leaders, this is where we start the journey…
The HR Leadership Project Mission
Building and equipping the People who build the people.
Our mission is to empower HR leaders to grow and develop as people, as well as within their roles. With this empowerment, true transformation will happen – true well-being delivers real results.
Why This Matters
Today's landscape is more complex than ever: As an HR leader, you're intimately familiar with the challenges you face daily. For those outside the profession and for clarity, let's illuminate the current landscape:
It’s not surprising that many in the overstretched HR profession are burnt out!
"To win in the marketplace you must first win in the workplace." Doug Conant
Who's Looking After You?
In my interactions with HR leaders, I've often wondered: while you have the privilege of caring for your organisation's most valuable asset—its people—who's taking care of you? The pressure you're under is immense, and the impact of your work ripples through society, affecting not just employees but their families and communities.
Never before have we been so divided as a society with tribalism and siloing being more common than ever in the workplace. Adding yet another pressure on and HR teams struggling to help their teams communicate and integrate effectively. This is a huge challenge to put on top of the already huge HR workload and many do not feel equipped in terms of time or expertise to help bring ‘factions’ of their workplace together.
Also add into this the threat of ‘cancel culture.’ If HR do not manage to juggle the needs of their diverse workforce in a way deemed acceptable by the wider community or the lesser heard communities in their own workplace they risk reprimand, complaints being raised or being ‘cancelled’ themselves: Immediate issues include:
· Navigating the differing needs and expectations of a diverse workforce,
· Avoiding turning it into a league table
· Enabling different groups to become all the richer for working with those unlike themselves.
Richard Branson's words ring true here: "Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients." I believe the same principle applies to you - if we take care of HR leaders, you can better take care of your people.
Our Commitment to You
Through the HR Leadership Project, we are committing to:
• Uncovering Real Issues: I want to hear about the challenges you're facing. Together, we'll identify the key issues affecting HR leaders today.
• Providing Actionable Insights: I'll share our collective findings, offering a barometer of sentiment in HR leadership and practical solutions we can develop together.
• Facilitating Collaboration: I'll connect you with peers facing similar challenges, fostering a community of support and shared learning.
• Celebrating Best Practices: If you're part of a progressive organisation leading the way in HR, I want to hear your story and help share your lessons learned.
Sybil F. Stershic wisely noted, "The way your employees feel is the way your customers will feel." By supporting you, we're indirectly enhancing the entire customer experience. This multiplier effect is what drives my passion for this project.

“The last few years have taken the toll on all of us. HR can sit outside of the organisation they work for and have to hold the all elements of the place together. Outsiders can be easily forgotten or their commitment to the needs of others can make them forget about their own needs. I want to help you remember who you are, think about what you need, then support your plan to embed the workplace mission and drive forward employee confidence and wellbeing.” Neil Lawrence
We are committed to helping those who tirelessly help others. We, as training and development professionals want to provide you - the HR professionals - with the tools and support you need to nurture talent, foster wellbeing, celebrate diversity and drive organisational success . Through collaboration and shared learning, we believe we can elevate the role of HR into a force for creating creative thriving, people-centric workplaces.
