Human Intelligence: Beyond Algorithms
In spite of the rapid progress of artificial intelligence, human intelligence maintains a unique upper hand. Humans are able to think creatively and solve problems in ways that AI cannot. “Unprompted” communication and the nuance of language, a vital aspect of relationship building, and therefore organizational success is a very human element of business. One that is hard to imagine, will ever be replaced. While AI may represent the future, humans behold it.
These uniquely human traits enable us to approach challenges from various angles and devise breakthrough concepts. In contrast, artificial intelligence can process and analyze vast amounts of data with exceptional speed and accuracy, with no fear of “human error”. However, when it comes to creative thinking, AI depends on the groundwork of human ingenuity, leveraging the patterns and insights that we've fed into its algorithms. AI ultimately relies on human ingenuity for creativity.
Imagine a marketing campaign brainstorm. AI quickly suggests proven ideas based on data, but a human team member, drawing from personal experiences, humour and diverse elements, proposes a completely new approach that captures attention. This demonstrates how human creativity, untethered by data-driven patterns, can lead to fresh, game-changing concepts, revealing that AI's innovation thrives on the foundation of human ingenuity.
Human emotional intelligence is key in forging bonds of leadership, counselling, and negotiation. Its unique power lies in understanding and managing emotions, fostering trust, empathy, and effective collaboration. Unlike AI, our range of emotions and lived experience makes us more apt for empathetic connections. The ability to gauge a “vibe”, understand body language and see the light in another’s eyes, is something we cannot engineer.
In a crucial team meeting, AI may assist in communication strategies, yet it's the way a manager picks up the change in tone, side glances and a shift in energy to realise one of his associates is having a hard time. He is not sure what the issue is, but these crucial cues enable him to have a more detailed conversation about it privately and manage the situation. This illustrates how our ability to understand emotions and connect on a human level transcends AI's capabilities, emphasizing the irreplaceable role of emotional intelligence in effective leadership and collaboration.
Contextual Understanding:
Contextual Understanding thrives on the richness of experiences and cultural nuances. Our histories, our stories and our ambitions drive our behaviour. Our capacity to discern shades of meaning and interpret unspoken cues makes us adept judges of context. Unlike AI, which relies on predefined algorithms, our understanding goes beyond ones and zeros. Humans are able to account for cultural or situational factors and make well-informed decisions based on a comprehensive understanding of the environment
Imagine a scenario where two colleagues, Alex and Wei, from different cultural backgrounds, are working on a project together. During a meeting, Wei hesitates to express his disagreement with a proposed idea. Alex, who is aware of Wei's cultural tendency to value harmony and avoid direct confrontation, picks up on Wei's subtle cues and encourages him to share his thoughts. Alex's ability to understand Wei's behavioural nuances and adapt their approach demonstrates the depth of contextual understanding that humans possess, going beyond predefined algorithms.
Metacognition is almost the human equivalent to machine learning, encompassing self-awareness and introspection. It forms a moral compass that guides ethical decisions by prompting reflection on dilemmas and aligned choices. This introspective capacity allows humans to navigate complex situations while considering ethical implications. In contrast, AI necessitates human oversight to ensure responsible application, highlighting the distinction between human and artificial intelligence.

While AI can analyze data and propose solutions, it lacks the ability to deeply ponder the ethical consequences. Human metacognition steps in, prompting members to reflect on the broader implications, cultural sensitivities, and long-term effects. This showcases how human introspection, rooted in self-awareness, offers a critical dimension to ethical decision-making, emphasizing that while AI can assist, it is the human moral compass that ensures responsible and thoughtful choices in complex business scenarios.
Our social inclinations lead us to value gatherings, parties, and friendships, fostering bonds that often transcend transactions. Even in the virtual space, aren't we all just looking to be understood? Looking to be a part of something, a community.
Unlike AI, which lacks emotional consciousness, our capacity for genuine connections allows us to provide meaningful support and establish authentic relationships. Our relationships make us stronger, wiser, and more fulfilled. We cherish them in ways machines can’t understand. We can be irrational, we can be fools - in love, in greed or in need. The ability to empathize is a uniquely human blend of social interaction and experience that allows us to have meaningful interactions. And in this human world, success is built on the quality of our relationships.
Human intelligence possesses a special intuitive quality often referred to as "gut feeling" or "sixth sense." It's an intricate interplay of experience, emotions, and subconscious processing that allows us to make split-second judgments, often beyond the scope of AI. This intuitive insight, grounded in the complexities of human existence, is a testament to the irreplaceable value of human intelligence in decision-making and problem-solving.
And there lies the problem, how do you explain to machines that at times the logically correct answer, is not the right answer?
Consider this: an experienced entrepreneur faced two investment options backed by solid data. Despite one choice seeming logically sound, a strong gut feeling prompted them to choose the other option. Subsequent challenges validated their intuition, as the seemingly favorable choice encountered unforeseen difficulties, while the intuitively chosen investment yielded smoother growth. This showcases how gut feelings and intuition can guide business decisions towards more favorable outcomes than strictly logical analysis.
In essence, our ingenuity, empathy, and connection are what bring meaning and excitement to our lives. They bind us together as individuals and shape the world we share. As Artificial Intelligence becomes more sophisticated, it may complement our journey, but it is our uniquely human qualities that will always be the heart of the story. Let us continue to nurture our creativity, cultivate our relationships, and listen to our intuition. These are the things that make us human, and these are the things worth living for.

3moMeasuring bias in AI models is akin to detective work. We're like Sherlock Holmes, scrutinizing every detail to ensure fairness. Statistical Parity: It is like “Making sure everyone gets their fair slice of the pizza.” When we create an AI model, we hope it will treat everyone fairly. Consider a hiring model, for instance. We want both male and female applicants to have the same opportunity to get hired. If males receive more pizza (or get job offers) than females, then it is clear that there is bias. The statistical parity test measures that. Fairness Metrics: Consider this as a special ruler we use to measure our AI's fairness. One principle is "utility,” and another one is duty. One pertinent rule of these was accuracy — accurate information to be true. It gauges how faithful to truth or Humane Detective Work: Everybody else is biased, so we need a human eye to identify bias So we see the AI’s decisions and then ask, “Is this justice? We are like detectives solving each case! When we hand over our AI, we must ask ourselves how to act like an equal, friendly robot. That's why we test for bias to ensure its unbiasedness!
