Hurricane Helene's Impact on Community Action Agencies: A Call for Digital Resilience
The recent devastation caused by Hurricane Helene has left many businesses and non-profits, particularly Community Action Agencies (CAAs) in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and surrounding areas, grappling with unprecedented challenges. I have many friends and customers in these areas and am not yet able to contact them. We hope and pray that they are safe.
As we wait patiently to hear if our loved ones are OK. We can't help but reflect on the aftermath, it's crucial to consider the vulnerabilities exposed by this natural disaster and explore solutions to enhance our resilience.
The Toll on Community Services
Community Action Agencies, vital lifelines for many vulnerable individuals and families, have been hit hard by the hurricane. The impact is twofold:
For those already in need, this disaster has compounded their struggles, as the very organizations designed to help them have lost access to essential information and resources.
Assessing Our Vulnerabilities
This catastrophe serves as a stark reminder of our susceptibility to natural disasters. It prompts us to ask:
The Case for Digital Transformation
Organizations must consider embracing paperless solutions to mitigate these risks and ensure continuity of services. Document management systems like Laserfiche offer several advantages:
Steps Toward Resilience
A Practical Example
We all remember COVID-19 and how suddenly offices were shut down and people had to work from home. One of our CAP agencies, Minnesota Valley Action Council reacted very quickly to the mandatory office closure. They instructed their staff to take their computers home and call IT to help them get connected properly. Within a few hours everyone was home and online and servicing their clients. All of their energy assistance applications were in Laserfiche ECM and radially available for them to continue processing. And the Laserfiche Workflow allowed them to easily collaborate with other team members that were part of the approval process even if they were miles apart.
Would it be possible for your organization to be operational within a few hours if you building was destroyed? It is possible if you have the proper set up.
Conclusion
While our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by Hurricane Helene, this tragedy underscores the urgent need for digital resilience in our organizations. By embracing paperless solutions, we can better weather future storms, both literal and figurative, ensuring that we can continue to serve our communities when they need us most. As we move forward, let's commit to building more resilient systems that can withstand the challenges of an unpredictable world, safeguarding our ability to support those who depend on us.
