I AM: Women’s History Month

Meet Jenny Chan, Purchasing Agent in Union City, California. As a Purchasing Agent, Jenny assists with inventory, sales, and vendors. Jenny monitors the order process, negotiates with suppliers, and reviews inventory across our warehouse sites.

1. How long have you been in the distribution industry? I have been working in the distribution industry for over 5 years.

2. What is your favorite part of your field of work? My favorite aspect of this field is ensuring customer satisfaction. Fulfilling orders accurately and efficiently, knowing the customer will receive their items on time and in perfect condition.

3. What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about driving results: I find it rewarding to ensure all procedures are followed, keeping everything on track for timely deliveries. Building strong relationships with vendors through open communication is key to a smooth supply chain, which I’m passionate about achieving.

4. Describe your career progression: My career began in manufacturing. Currently my role in distribution allows me to use that knowledge while gaining valuable experience in material handling, operations and product functionality.

5. What does Women’s History Month mean to you? Women's History Month to me means celebrating, recognizing, and empowering women. Individual aspects such as strength, style, and equality should be highlighted. This is a month to reflect on women's contributions to the world.

6. Talk about a woman, past or present, who inspires you: A woman that comes in my mind is Oprah Winfrey. Not only is she a great philosopher and actress but her talk show played a significant role in shaping my outlook in life, career and goal setting.

7. How do you see yourself as a role model to younger women? I believe in empowering my younger friends by sharing my experiences and life changing events with them. Promoting pros & cons and hoping they can be used to make better decisions.

I would also like to encourage women to embrace their inner strength and not belittle themselves and never underestimate their own power, because without inner strength and power, there is no success.

8. Is there a woman who has influenced your life/career most? How? My mom has influenced me; she is an incredibly strong individual. My dad works overseas with his business, and they usually see each other once or twice a year. She struggled to manage three children, work and family. Making sure we all stayed healthy and well. She is a self-solving individual with a bubbly personality.

My work ethic reflects my mom’s strong personality by taking the initiative to solve problems independently before reaching out to the manager or broader team. Just like my mom, I’m a self-starter, I believe in managing my time wisely and getting things done efficiently.

9. What advice would you give to the next generation of women? I would say never give up! Find some time to listen and understand yourself better. Set a goal step-by-step. Don't be afraid to challenge yourself and embrace opportunities for growth at work as these are valuable assets.
