"I Can Stop Anytime I Want" Coaches, Consultants, Experts & The Overachiever's Biggest Addiction
Hey You! Pssssssst! You!
Yes YOU.
I'm talking to you, high performer, over-achiever. You are a business leader who actually READS STUFF on LinkedIn???? Seriously???
Then let me talk to you for a quick moment, about the addiction we probably share.
If you think you can stop any time you want, stop reading now.
But if you're intrigued, give me the chance to inspire you with this thought: right now, as we round the last corner of Summer, this is the PERFECT time to transform our biggest addiction.
If we do, and we admit we are powerless over this addiction, we can set ourselves up for the most insane autumn harvest of ridiculous prosperity we've seen in our lives.
But first, we have to SEE the addiction for what it is, and that's not easy.
It is literally the water in which we swim. (Do fish talk about the water in which they swim? I have no idea. But I bet they don't.)
This is ESPECIALLY true for Americans, as this addiction is literally our only national religion, but it crops up in plenty of other places as well.
Psychologists, scientists, and healers of all kinds have discovered that we literally get addicted to the biological chemicals of certain emotions and states of being - even if they're negative.
Here in America, we specialize in STRUGGLE. We love it.
We love to WORK HARD, or, if not hard, then WORK SMART. Ours is a Rags to Riches, Bootstrap-Loving Culture, and for many, many years of our history, people DID mostly have to work damn hard to get ahead.
However, I've noticed a pretty big change in my lifetime, in my experience, and with my students and clients.
I started teaching at university when I was 26. I started working with clients at 34. It's been a couple years since then (cough!) but I've seen the same thing, over and over and over.
Sure, sometimes there are those times when you just gotta buckle down. And get 'er done. No crying in baseball, etc. I'm from New England; I'm Danish and Scottish; I grew up Presbyterian. You think I don't know there's not going be a parade? Oh Hell No. I KNOW there isn't.
But if you want access to that REAL momentum, that true creativity, that place where sh*t gets so good you can hardly stand it? Where sh*t gets JUICY?
You're going to have to find a way to A) admit you are powerless over your addiction to struggle, and B) turn said addiction over to a higher power who cares for you. Who, in this particular case, is called FUN.
Now "fun" is different for different kinds of people.
For some of us, "fun" is fun. I'm that way. For others, "productivity" is fun (and different than "struggle"). For some, intellectual juiciness is fun.

But if we surrender to our own personal brand of "fun," more often, on a more regular basis, we'll notice things starting to change in our business - especially all that stuff we've been trying to move, and trying to impact, and having no luck.
And all of a sudden, POOF! All kinds of new people and opportunities crop up.
The times when I've seen my clients double, triple, quadruple or even 10X their revenue? And start working with the clients, customers, or colleagues of their dreams? More fun, less struggle, is always, always a part of it.
We're talking a lot about AI and "outer" technology these days, but. . . (whispers) "the inner technology - is even MORE important!"
In fact, I'd go so far as to say this:
Do we want to thrive in a world that's being rocked to its core by changes in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum leaps forward in consciousness?
Then it's time to upgrade our internal software. As "lifelong learners," it's essential that we continue to install new updates - and find a way to get more deeply addicted to the chemical hits of happiness, gratitude, and wonder.
Whaddaya think? Am I off my rocker?
Or are you willing to turn over a little bit of struggle today?
And if so, what will you do instead?

Ellen's Quick Tip for More LinkedIn Happiness:
My best days on LinkedIn are when I take the time (60 seconds is all it takes!) to experience my gratitude and wonder for the incredible people on this platform - and the sheer freaking awesomeness of the technology that makes it possible for me to discover business and thought leaders like YOU.
When I read your comments, your content, or visit your profile, I stop for a moment and give thanks for your contribution to the world, for the service you provide. I think of all the people whose lives have been changed by your work.
I close my eyes and send you rocket ship blessings of love and light. I love sending the blessing that today will be THE day where you receive the call, the message, the news, or the insight that thrills you.
I see you.
You are magnificent.

1yI find that infusing fun at work enhances creativity, relieves stress, and boosts morale. It fosters collaboration, increases productivity, and creates a positive environment that attracts talent. Enjoying work, even if "hard" or if it creates "struggles" enriches life overall.

1yLove this! I participated in a mindful money webinar awhile back that dug a little deeper into our ideas and subconscious beliefs around "earning " a paycheck. A powerful question was posed that has stuck with me ever since. " I deserve to be paid when I ........." My initial and honest gut reaction was "work hard" ( and more subtly am uncomfortable) ouch. I think when our parents model going to work as something difficult and/or miserable it leaves a lasting impact that requires an introspective inquiry to resolve.
