I can't look!

If you, like me, just can’t bear to look at the news lately, we can take solace in all the cool inkjet stuff to learn about. I plan to spend as much time as possible just geeking out over new technologies and the promise of more and better to come.

Mary Schilling will be, per usual, ahead of me on that. This week she is waxing poetic about all the cool tools she got to see at drupa. I think she wore out a couple of pairs of sneakers getting around all the different halls to meet with people. Here she gushes about the coolest of the cool, and provides a link to the first in her Cool Tools video series on WhatTheyThink.com.

Meanwhile, Ralf Schlözer is continuing his series of interviews with inkjet integrators where he profiles companies, large and small, that custom-develop inkjet printing solutions. This time he caught up with the Germany based developer, C-marx about the interesting range of applications they enable with their services. Unlike some of the integrators previously showcased here, C-marx is not tied to a particular printhead type. They use the printhead that will best fit the application requirements.  

Whether you’re buying a press or building a press, it’s important to understand how different types of printheads fit the requirements of particular applications. There are tradeoffs in initial cost, durability, compatibility, flexibility and more. For document-oriented and graphic arts applications there have been three main printhead technologies for decades: piezoelectric drop-on-demand, thermal drop-on-demand and continuous inkjet. However, those technologies have evolved and improved in many ways over the years. There is no obvious best choice without taking a careful look at the specific implementation.
