'I can't stop snacking, I hate myself!'
This is something that I have been hearing A LOT recently and is something that I tackle with my clients on my 6-month programme.
It is a vicious cycle - you snack to make yourself feel better which ultimately makes you feel worse and so on...
So what can you do?
The reality is that rebuilding your self-esteem and control around food takes time but here are some tips:
1. Be kind to yourself. There is a multitude of reasons for what you're doing.
2. Eat regular meals and snacks throughout the day - try not to go 4 hours without something.
3. Make sure that your meals are satisfying you and include a good source of protein and plenty of veg. Prepping in advance can help.
4. Don't run away from your feelings, sit with them and start working with them. Once they are out there, you can find better strategies.
5. Remember that this is a really weird time for everyone. We will all be using food to cope in some way - me included!
6. Exercise, go for a walk. This can have such a soothing effect and help with any food anxieties.
7. Don't restrict or ban any foods. A client has just told me that having a bit of chocolate every day in lockdown has stopped her having a 'blow out'
8. Stop thinking that you need to go on another diet or 'eat clean'. The chances are that you are putting too much pressure on yourself which never works. Find balance, don't be black or white.
9. Look a what is missing in your diet, don't take away. If you are lacking essential nutrients, you won't feel your best.
I hope this helps.
I would love to hear your thoughts and/or experiences with this.
