I was a coke addict for over twenty-five years.
After over 25 years of addiction to Diet Coke where I was drinking between 6 to 18 cans a day, I am over the moon to have become free of the poison. Whoop! You may view Diet Coke as harmless, and of course compared to other illegal addictive substances you could argue that it is. But Diet Coke is not good for you, and in the quantities I was drinking it, definitely not. Evidence now shows that just 40 minutes after drinking a can the potentially deadly combination of caffeine and aspartame creates a short addictive high similar in the way cocaine works. It's no wonder it hooked me. Excitotoxins are released which may exhaust your brain by overstimulating its neuroreceptors, especially if consumed on a regular basis.
This infographic was sent to me five times by concerned friends. It's included in a brilliant article by The Renegade Pharmacist.
Who would have thought something perceived as "harmless" could affect someone so much. People even give Diet Coke to children, so surely it can't be that bad? I'm afraid it can, whilst the impact on my life and those around me did not compare to those who suffer addictions to drugs, gambling or alcohol it had an uncomfortable grip on my life.
The bottom of the can
Those of you who know me will have always seen me with a can in my hand, as well as one in a lens compartment of my bag. I needed to have one cold in the fridge for the morning or I would not be able to sleep. I simply couldn't rest unless I knew that there was a cold Diet Coke in the fridge ready for that satisfying tsss... of the can as soon as I woke.
I was never satisfied with one. Ever. As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, I was drinking at least six cans a day. The average would be about ten, with a long shoot day easily pushing the tally up to eighteen. I was a connoisseur of the fizzy stuff, easily able to distinguish whether a can was past its best, or heaven forbid...Pepsi.
Not only is it BAD for you on so many levels, it's not great for your bank balance either. I remember driving huge distances out of my way to get Diet Coke late at night or early in the morning to see me through the day. Picking up the boxes of 12 on offer became an obsession, I would often visit four or five shops in order to 'get a bargain.' If things where tight I would put Diet Coke before most other things as it was a MUST have. That sounds ridiculous but it's the sad reality of my situation. I was spending well over £1,000 a year on Diet Coke. I was addicted for 25 years...the maths isn't difficult, but it is quite shocking.
How I got off coke
Quite by chance really. It was in a meeting with a potential new client, Kevin Porter from Transformational Hypnotherapy that Kevin started to tell me about all the strings to his bow and the journey that he has been on to date. We got on, and I thought 'sod it' I'll give this hypnotherapy thing a go.
I was quite sceptical that anyone would be able to assist me kicking the addiction, let alone through hypnotherapy. But in under an hour I was free of Diet Coke forever. Even more mind blowing, it was very relaxing and simple, for the most part I was just sitting on a extremely comfy chair with my feet up, fully conscious but relaxed. Even with my childish giggling Kevin worked his magic. He spoke to my subconscious mind, and it actually gave a signal back!
This took place on the 23rd of October. I have not drunk Diet Coke since our session. At all. On the 22nd October it would have been unthinkable for me to do a car journey without a can, let alone over a week.
So whilst it is not long, I have never felt like this on any of the attempts to stop before. I just don't have the desire for it now. In fact I just had to check my calendar to see when our session was, as drinking coke feels so long ago.
Life after coke
Me without Diet Coke feels strange but brilliant. I have to say I have a few breakout spots right now, and have been slightly more dippy this last week than normal, but I can live with all of that. For the freedom! To not have to consider something that occupied my thoughts every day has made me feel lighter. I'm telling everyone I meet like I'm six years old. I am so proud of myself, even though it was actually Kevin who did the hard work.
Health wise, the benefits will be untold, I already feel better inside. No surprise really. This excerpt from The Renegade Pharmacist tells you all you need to know.
Findings from a variety of studies show that routine consumption of diet sodas, even one per day, can be connected to higher likelihood of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and high blood pressure, in addition to contributing to weight gain.” - Susan E. Swithers, a professor of psychological sciences and a behavioural neuroscientist.
I have shared an article below that discusses the downsides of Diet Coke and other similar diet sodas.

Happy Halloween to all. Please do get off Diet Coke and free yourself of the DEVIL that is Diet Coke.
