I did this to stop just "getting by," and start enjoying Christmas with family.

You know when you have had enough? You know that pivotal moment that changes everything...I clearly remember when I decided I had had enough. It was years before I had the guts to do anything about it...but the result of this, is I was settling, and feeling unhappy for much longer than I needed to be. Life is far too short to settle.

I was feeling so tired of just "getting by," despite the 25+ years I devoted to my retail career. For any company I worked for, I gave them my ALL and then some....so much so, my family came in a close 2nd. I think of this often, especially at this time of year, because as we all know Christmas time in retail is the busiest time of all, but it's also the time my kids are home on Christmas break from school. Instead of spending time with them, I was finding myself "stuck" at the store for extended periods of time...something had to give.

I felt very anxious about trying something new, something different. Retail was all I had ever done, and I was damn good at it. I had a passion for it. But as they say, you get burnt out eventually, and I did. Especially when you have a family, and you feel torn about leaving them, and not being able to be at every school or sports function they have, because you can't get coverage at work...I KNEW I had to make a change if I wanted different. If I wanted to be able to be at ALL of my kids extracurricular activities, I NEEDED to stop complaining about things, and just do it already. TIME was passing by too quickly, and every year I dreaded the holidays, instead of seeing and feeling the JOY in my kids excitement. (I was far too tired to feel anything....I was somewhat of a zombie)

I now have the pleasure of working wherever I choose to be that day. I can be home in the mornings and after school for my boys. When we travel, my biz can come with, as it's mobile. As long as there is a WIFI connection, and I have my phone I'm good to go! I am now the one that is in charge of my TIME, and my only regret is that I didn't do this sooner.

If you are tired of running around in circles, or if you are feeling "stuck" in your job that doesn't seem to be getting you anywhere, I have the solution for you. These days, it is definitely not a bad idea to have a Plan B, a side hustle...maybe you are still happy with what you are doing. If you are, that is fantastic! But just think 5-10-15 years down the road, what is it going to be like then? Will you want to do (or be able to do) the things that you do now?

Being in retail as long as I was, I didn't have a pension to fall back on. I didn't think about that when I was 20 years old, and starting out. Funny how your perspective changes as you grow older. You quickly realize what's really important. You may make 6 Figures at your job, but if you don't have the TIME to spend with others and do the things you love to do, what's the point?
