I don’t have money”: The #1 excuse to not get help
7 min read
Boost your financial power by rethinking your approach
Today, I want to tackle the most common excuse that often holds us back from achieving success: “I don’t have money.”
We’ll unpack the stories we tell ourselves about finances, and dissect the hidden beliefs that keep us stuck in our comfort zones.
I'll also offer a few practical tips on reframing how you view investing in yourself and discover untapped ways to boost your financial power.
Earn before you invest, right?
Since you probably didn’t invest much when you started your freelancing career, you might feel you need to earn a stable income before you make a financial investment, be it in software, coaching, independent contractor, training, etc.
Eventually, you ask yourself: When will I get stable income?
Waiting for that moment could take years, especially if you don’t know how to do everything yourself.
And what human knows how to do everything? You can’t be expected to because it’s not your job!
And even if you do know how, is it worth your time to DIY it?
These questions and challenges often come up in the first three years of business.
You want to get the job done right which usually means hiring an expert in their field so that you can concentrate on more important things such as lead generation and serving your clients.
It’s a difficult perspective shift to make though and guess what? It took me three years to make my first real investment in my business, and another 1.5 years to hire my first coach because I said the same thing: “I don’t have money.”
The fear of spending money
Many freelancers in the beginning stages don’t hire help because they’re afraid to spend money.
And so instead, they come to me after they’ve invested lots of time trying everything with little results to show for it.
What a waste of energy, time, and yes, money!
For the love of yourself and your work, know this: You cannot run a successful business without any kind of an investment.
And if you believe that time or energy is not as valuable as money, think about it this way: Your time and energy are finite. Money? Not at all!
Money is infinite! Time is limited and, therefore, way more precious than money, so make sure you spend your time wisely, too.
“Everything is energy, and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.” ~ Albert Einstein
Money is energy. It comes and goes, and flows naturally, just like water.
Humans are also energy, and nature, governed by the 12 Universal Laws of Nature.
The most renowned being the Law of Attraction: You receive what you focus on.
If you continuously say that you don’t have money, the Universe thinks: “OK, Sally, message received. You don’t have money means you don’t want or need it.”
What you say and think is important, so please watch your language!
Affirmations only help if you firmly believe them. You can’t just mutter ‘I am abundant. Money flows to me easily and effortlessly’ and then secretly laugh at the thought.
If you believe in the ways of the universe and positive thinking, then take full advantage of setting the intention to welcome money in easily.
What does the money excuse really mean?
If you say: “I don’t have money” when you really want to solve a problem in your business, you are actually saying that you and your business aren’t worth it and you’re unwilling to take the next step to try to solve that problem.
If this is you, how do you think you’ll create any kind of change if you don’t believe in yourself, or in your business?
Because let’s be honest: The ‘no money’ excuse is never about the money.
We’re all hanging out on Social media and video chatting, have the privilege of working from home, and nomading our way through life. Many freelancers are expats and had the money to move. We have shelter, food, clothing, cars, bikes, cell phones, computers, etc. We even go on vacation! We literally have everything we need.

Invest in your business: Yes or No?
If you genuinely want to take advantage of the offer presented to you and find yourself saying “I don’t have money” because you’re not earning ‘enough’ yet, I encourage you to reframe that statement.
Express what you truly mean: “I’m prioritizing something else.” Then, identify what that something else is by ensuring it’s a profitable investment.
Are you prioritizing you and your business?
If you’re not resonating with the offer, or the person presenting it, then please just be honest and say why you’re not interested.
It’ll be fine. The person on the receiving end will be grateful for your honesty rather than spending the time to try to convince you otherwise.
Because if you dish out this excuse when you’re really not interested, you’re just starting the sales process, meaning, you’re setting yourself up for a longer conversation about why you’ve just said that.
If your clients say: “I don’t have money.”, then it’s up to you to explore further and get to the root cause of what they’re prioritizing instead.
Don’t open that can of worms if you want cashews instead.
Exploring further
What exactly is your fear behind investing?
Continue digging and ask yourself:
I almost guarantee that if you explore your own situation by answering these questions every time you have the urge to say: “I don’t have money”, you’ll feel completely different about it, and you’ll be more inspired to move forward.
If you hold tight to the illusion that you don’t have money, I almost guarantee that you will always feel that way, and that you will stay in this energy of ‘lack’ which will continue to block your progress.
Which path will you take?
When I was ‘poor’
When I was 14, I started working for our pets’ veterinarian down the street. I worked about 25 hours a week for minimum wage, and back in the 80s in the US, it only amounted to about $3.50/hour. I worked every day, weekend and holiday until I left for the university at 17. I loved that job, not for the money, for the fact that I got paid for taking care of animals.
During my time at the university, I financed everything myself: Tuition, books, food, housing, my car, entertainment, absolutely everything. My parents helped pay for my sister to go to a private college and didn’t ‘have’ enough money for me, so it was up to me to get an education.
I spent my money wisely and prioritized going to live concerts as part of my entertainment allowance.
One day, I bought a ticket to see Stevie Ray Vaughn for June 15, 1990 with Joe Cocker in Atlanta.
I ended up selling the ticket because I convinced myself that ‘I don’t have money’.
Stevie Ray Vaughn died in a helicopter crash 2 months later on August 27, 1990, and that day I swore never ever to tell myself that lack story again.
Missing a concert isn’t that big of a deal and I can’t really compare it to saying ‘no’ to your own business, however, it was a big deal to me back then because I missed an opportunity that I’ll never get again.
It was a huge lesson I learned and still live by to this day:
If I really want something, I will find a way to get it.
“Most people are deeply scripted in what I call the Scarcity Mentality. They see life as having only so much, as though there were only one pie out there. And if someone were to get a big piece of the pie it would mean less for everybody else… Instead, I have an Abundance Mentality: when people are genuinely happy at the successes of others, the pie gets larger.” ~ Stephen Covey
“Be thankful for what you have, you’ll end up having more; if you concentrate on what you don’t have, you’ll never have enough.” ~ Oprah Winfrey
